Saints Defense and Brees prove too scary for Steelers on Halloween
The Pittsburgh Steelers has been considered the "best NFL team" by most NFL sports writers and pros. The Steelers defense has been considered the "best defense in the NFL." This Halloween in the Louisiana Superdome, Drew Brees and the Saints Defense proved they are still the reigning
NFL Champions with a great performance against the visiting Steelers.
Gregg Williams called a great defensive game. The blitzes harassed Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger the entire game. The Saints recorded 2 sacks and 5 hits on Big Ben. More importantly, the defense caused Heath Miller to fumble on a crucial Steelers drive late in the 4th quarter and Roethlisberger to throw an interception into the hands of Saints CB Leigh Torrence on their final drive. It was Torrence's first NFL interception.
New Orleans defense has played extremely well this season. In the past 4 games, the defense has allowed only 1 TD per game. Their goal line stand against the Steelers gave New Orleans the momentum and confidence throughout the entire game. It was a confidence that Gregg Williams relished as he called zone blitzes and well disguised schemes against a very good Steelers offense.
Drew Brees was deadly accurate in the second half. He threw for 20/22 and 191 yards against the Steelers in the half. He picked apart the Steelers and Lance Moore and Marques Colston were outstanding making some difficult catches on the Steelers' secondary. Sean Payton and Brees were patient, yet aggressive in the second half. This serves as a good formula for the once struggling offense.
The Saints win helped them to keep pace with Atlanta and Tampa Bay in the NFC South. The Saints will travel to Carolina on next week to visit a wounded, yet dangerous, Panthers team. Should the Saints win the game, New Orleans will head into their bye week with at 6-3 record. This should give them enough time to have starters Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas, Jabari Greer and Tracey Porter back on the field. Sean Payton will have some personnel moves to make and choose to keep or release running backs Jones or Betts. Based upon the recent performances and speed, Jones may have the advantage.
The Saints offense should be back on track, if they can be more consistent. If the defense continues to perform at high level the rest of the regular season, the team could be well in the hunt to defend their NFL Championship.
