2012 NFL Free Agency: Saints Ink Special Teams Stud Courtney Roby

The New Orleans Saints announced on Monday that they have come to terms on a new contract with free agent wide receiver/special teams standout Courtney Roby.

The financial details of the deal are unknown, but it’s a subtle yet important move for a team that has underwent tremendous turmoil this offseason.

Originally a 2005 third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans, Roby was signed by the Saints in 2008 and has since blossomed into a well-rounded and pivotal special teams player, having served as a primary coverage player and also as a kick returner for New Orleans.

In 2011, Roby served as a special teams captain and led New Orleans with 13 special teams tackles.

It’s unlikely that he will assume an offensive role in 2012, despite the loss of vertical threat Robert Meachem in free agency. Roby has just one reception since joining the Saints.

Monday marked the first day that New Orleans was without head coach Sean Payton, who began serving a year-long suspension as a result of the fallout from the Bountygate scandal.

The punishments for the 22 to 27 players involved have not yet been decided upon by Commissioner Roger Goodell, although it sounds as though a ruling is forthcoming in the near future.
