10 Observations: Packers Defense allowed Brees 3 TD's; However Saints Missed on 4 Red Zone Opportunities with just 6 points!

Aaron Rodgers and his receiving corps were sharp! However, some critical points are being overlooked by the national media in their 42-34 win over the Saints on Thursday night. 1. Drew Brees guided a last second attempt to score and possibly tie the football game after the Packers dominated the Saints all night at Lambeau Field. 2. Drew Brees threw 3 TD's for 419 yards (32/49). Rodgers had 3 TD's for 312 yard (27/35). 3. Packers defense allowed the Saints to drive inside the red zone 7 times. Fortunately for the Packers they turned the Saints away from 4 of those opportunities and allowing New Orleans to walked away with 6 points. 4. The Saints still have short-yardage issues and critical times. Sean Payton has had a career of missing this in New Orleans. If this issue is not corrected, the Saints face a long season. Zach Strief cannot run block and pass block. His footwork was terrible against Clay Matthews. 5. Gregg Williams did not correct poor technique of Patrick Robinson and Jabari Greer. The two cornerbacks consistently lined-up an average of 10 yards away for the Packers wideouts and allowed Rodgers to easily pick-up first downs. 6. The Saints Special Teams were great AND poor. 7. Darren Sproles has easily made Saints fans forget about Reggie Bush by his performance. Sproles had 129 yards on Kick-off and Punt returns; 75 yards receiving and 7 yards rushing. His 72 yard Punt return for a Touchdown was spectacular. The Saints are sure to see more of these from the former Charger in 2011. 8. Saints defense and Packers defense both were poor tackling in the secondary. 9. Saints Offensive line were getting mauled. 10. Shaun Rodgers was being double teamed and neutralized by the Packers in short-yardage and goal line plays. The Saints defense will be under fire all season. Teams will look to exploit the run and Patrick Robinson. One thing is for sure, the linebackers and Roman Harper lacked the speed of the slot receivers and tight ends. Shanle played the run tough, but is too slow to cover in passing situations. Even though the Packers beat the Saints. It was not as convincing as the media is portraying them to be as Super Champions for 2011. The Saints moved the ball on the Packers. If it were not for the Defensive mistakes and poor Offensive line play on running situations, the Saints would have won this game. Also, Zach Strief is on the HOTSEAT all season long. Charles Brown may be starting in a few games.

Saints "PLUG UP" Defensive Line Holes with Shaun Rogers

Shaun RogersThe signing and arrival of Shaun Rogers in New Orleans has given the Saints the much needed help along the Defensive Line since the days of Norman Hand. Rogers' presence will plug-up the running lanes which opponents have exploited for years under Sean Payton's teams. Rogers is a "BIG BODY" and special teams playmaker. If he is not stuffing the run, he blocks extra points and kicks.

Gregg Willams should see an "immediate relief" in how teams scheme their running plays against New Orleans in 2011. The one player that should experience a huge impact with Shaun Rogers anchoring the line in former first-round pick Sedrick Ellis. Ellis and Rogers will make a formidable Defensive Tackle tandem in the NFL next season.

Most teams were concerned about Rogers' lack of strong work ethic and perceived "disruptive" attitude.  However, with Gregg Williams' strong personality, Rogers most likely will not be a distraction for the Saints.  It has been reported that Rogers turned down a $6 million contract offer to accept and sign the Saints $4 million contract.  This bodes well for the Saints as the team has eyes on returning to the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Many free agent observers will notice the signing as a positive sign for New Orleans.  A continued emphasis of signing impact defensive players can be highlighted by the Saints need to draft a quality Defensive End or Linebacker in April's NFL Draft.

If New Orleans can draft a Craig Heyward from Ohio State, then Will Smith, Sedrick Ellis, Shaun Rogers and Heyward would be considered a solid front four in the league. This is why Rogers' addition was a good "sign" and "signing" for the Saints.

SHOCKING SAINTS NEWS! SHOCKEY IS CUT!

A Saints fan favorite, Jeremy Shockey, was cut today by the team.  Shockey's departure saves the team 4.5 million dollars.  Sean Payton released this statement:

“Jeremy played an important role in helping our team bring a Super Bowl championship to New Orleans. He contributed to the success of our offense, both as a pass-catcher and run blocker, and we’re appreciative of his efforts.”

Jeremy can give thanks to his fellow University of Miami alum, Jimmy Graham, and his development as one of the major reasons for his departure from the team.

“It’s a business, I understand,” Shockey told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols.  “I’ll just go play hard for someone else.  Whoever gets me it’s going to be a steal.”

Shockey was a model citizen and good teammate his years in New Orleans. Unfortunately, it appears the team never approached him about restructuring his contract and decided to move in another direction. With Jimmy Graham and Dave Thomas filling in for Shockey when he was ailing, both proved to be effective contributors to the offense. Graham's injury which kept him out of the Seattle Seahawks playoff loss was noticeable. The Saints may have jettisoned a great player in Shockey, but discovered a younger and just as talented one in Jimmy Graham.

Saints take control of Seahawks early with 10-0 lead

The New Orleans Saints take control of Seahawks early in the game with 10-0 lead.  The lead could easily been 14-0 if Reggie Bush did not drop a Brees pass inside the 5 yard line.

Saints expect a fight versus Seahawks

Sean Payton has spent the week trying to convince his team not to buy the hype.

You know, the Seahawks don’t belong in the playoffs, the Saints are clearly the better team, a possible rematch with Atlanta looms, yada, yada, yada.

Football coaches are usually on edge anyway, but Payton and the Saints have an opportunity to join some pretty elite company over the next month or so.

If they beat the Seahawks.  In Seattle.

If they then beat the Falcons or Bears.  In Atlanta or Chicago, respectively.

If they can get to the NFC championship game, which will be played on the road unless the final two seeds on their side of the bracket, the Saints and Green Bay Packers, manage to win two games away from home to get there.

Oh yeah. And win it.

It’s a daunting task, but it certainly has been done before.

The Pittsburgh Steelers went the wild-card round route to win the Super Bowl five years ago.

Two years later, Eli Manning and the New York Giants did the same, knocking off the previously undefeated New England Patriots in the big game. The Baltimore Ravens pulled it off in the 2000 NFL season.

Saints-Seattle NFC Wildcard Report (Olympian Video)

The likelihood of foul weather, a six-hour flight and the ear-splitting crowd noise that awaits him at Qwest Field will not serve as distractions for one of the best quarterbacks in the league. New Orleans’ Drew Brees won’t be overwhelmed by the moment.

“I’d be shocked if Drew was surprised by anything,” Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said. “He’s a great player, one of the best. I consider him a friend. He’s a guy I look up to in a lot of ways. He’s just done a great job on and off the field leading his team, leading the people around him. He’s a special player, special person, and he won the Super Bowl last year for a reason.”

So if the Seahawks hope to contain one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the last five years they’ll have to do it the old-fashioned way – they’ll have to earn it.
