So it's likely they'll do more than kick the tires on some unrestricted free agents next month. If the Bears aim to upgrade at wide receiver and anyone who saw them play last season would advise them to do so they'll have plenty of targets in free agency.

If anyone had suggested as late as halftime of their Christmas Eve game against the Jets that Tom Coughlin's team would go on to beat Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in Super Bowl XLVI just six weeks later, you would have demanded they get drug-tested. Standing at 7-7 after an ugly home loss against the Redskins and owners of a four-game losing streak that dropped them from 6-2 to 6-6, the Giants seemed much more liable to get Coughlin fired in January than make hotel reservations for Indianapolis in February.

The Siena men's basketball team won't be at a Super Bowl party because it'll be on the road Sunday evening, returning from a game against Fairfield in Bridgeport, Conn. "We'll be on the bus," Siena senior guard Kyle Downey said. "I'm sure we'll watch it on our phones and stuff like that. It's no big deal. Coach Carter will probably be ticked off the most." Assistant coach Craig Carter, who's a New York Giants' fan, and the rest of the Saints should be in a much better mood if they can knock off the Stags in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at 3:30 p.m. in the Arena at Harbor Yard.

For months, the Giants were carried by their explosive offense. For months, the 49ers were winning with their sledgehammer defense. It should make for an intriguing NFC Championship Game at Candlestick Park. If the Giants make this game about the quarterbacks, figure they have the advantage with Eli Manning over Alex Smith. If the 49ers turn this into a run-the-ball referendum, they have the edge. The field could be wet and the rain might be falling, but these teams will go at each other as long as necessary to claim the prize of conference champs headed to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.
