Falcons waste chance to make things simple

The biggest home game in franchise history: That's how this was billed, and here we pause to note that 45 seasons make for a considerable chunk of history. (Almost half a century!) And even if the Falcons entered Monday night's game against New Orleans with a comfy Plan B --- they could lose to the Saints and still win the NFC South and clinch a No. 1 seed by beating Carolina on Sunday --- nobody wanted to do it the easy way. But that, alas, is the way it will have to be. The Falcons tripped over their moment. This isn't to say they can't have moments still, but they tripped over this one.

South title still on hold;Brees nearly throws game away with a pickoff in fourth, then rallies New

The Falcons made Drew Brees pay for a huge mistake, but couldn't stop the New Orleans quarterback with everything on the line, losing 17-14 to the Saints in a tightly played Monday Night Football game. With 3:24 left to play, Brees coolly tossed a 6-yard scoring pass to rookie tight end Jimmy Graham for the game-winner, delaying an NFC South championship and No. 1 playoff seed for Atlanta (12-3). That capped a 13-play, 92-yard drive. That more than made up for an unfathomable error by the offensive leader of the Saints (11-4).

Ashley Fox: Eagles should avoid a No. 3 seed at all costs

Every year it seems, as the NFL regular season grinds to an end, there is a game the Eagles point to and say, "If only." Last year, it was the dud against Oakland, a dreadful loss to a horrible team that had it been a win, the Eagles would have hosted their first-round playoff game against Dallas rather than play the Cowboys on the road. When this season finally finishes up on Sunday, the Eagles very well might look back at that afternoon in Nashville when Titans defensive tackle Jason Jones forced a LeSean McCoy fumble at the Tennessee 3-yard line and turned what looked like an Eagles win into an 18-point L. The Eagles had that game won and in an instant lost their composure. After they blinked, it was over. Kenny Britt had a vintage T.O. performance, and the Eagles limped home with a damaged defense and an inexplicable loss.

What many expected to be a shootout started slowly Monday night. The Falcons and Saints, who both rank in the top seven of the NFL in scoring with averages in the mid-20s, sputtered offensively during the first half.

Falcons squander chance to show who's best in NFC

The Atlanta Falcons' goals for the regular season - a division title and home-field advantage through the NFC playoffs - remain in reach. What's been lost is that feeling of invincibility, especially if they face the New Orleans Saints again in a few weeks.
