BIG BLUE GEARED FOR BAY BATTLE G-MEN brace for physical 49ers

They knocked heads earlier this season and this week studied enough film to see the carnage and almost feel the damage. No one ever said the 49ers cannot be beat, but the Giants understand the physical challenge before them is unlike any they have faced thus far in their exhilarating postseason run. The 49ers leave nuance to others. The singular characteristic of how they go about their business is one of sheer force.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

It's not the end of the world Re: Tom Meyer political cartoon on Jan. 12 "The Mayans believed the world would end in 2012 - crazy, huh?". Please stop this madness that the Mayans believed the world would end in 2012. The Mayans created a calendar that ends in 2012. What do we do today when our calendar ends on Dec. 31? We get a new calendar. Besides, it won't really be the end of the world, just the evolution of mankind.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer: Steve Spagnuolo Will Become Saints Defensive Coordinator

According to a report confirmed by NFL Network insider Jason LaCanfora, FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer is reporting that former Giants defensive coordinator and Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo has agreed to take over for the departing Gregg Williams in New Orleans.  Details of the contract have not yet been finalized.

Spagnuolo, the architect of the Giants' fire-zone blitz that led New York to victory in Super Bowl XLII, will head up a defensive unit ranked third-worst against the pass and 24th against the run.

NFL Offseason 2012: New Orleans Saints Continue to Lose Coaches

Mike Triplett of the The Times-Picayune has reported that New Orleans Saints' secondary coach Tony Oden has left the team to take the same position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This past season was Oden's first as the Saints' secondary coach. Before that, Oden was the assistant secondary coach to Dennis Allen. Oden took over the secondary after Allen left the Saints to become the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator.

Most of the time, coaches do not leave a team unless they are to be promoted to a higher position with a different club. However, there are cases where a coach will leave to take the same job and, obviously, this is one of those cases.

The fact that Oden has left the Saints is not a troublesome matter. The most likely reason for this is because it is not guaranteed that the new Saints defensive coordinator will keep the previous defensive position coaches.

Oden may have felt that was not going to be in New Orleans next year because of a new defensive coordinator and decided to take an opportunity that came up. Things like this will happen, especially when a team experiences as much success as the Saints have in recent years.

New Orleans has a lot of leadership on defense and in the secondary. Players like Jabari Greer and Roman Harper are experienced enough to keep that group together. The younger players in that corps, such as Patrick Robinson, Malcolm Jenkins and Johnny Patrick, will be fine as well.

Whoever the coach the Saints bring in to take over the defense will likely bring a couple of his guys with him.

Thus far, in the short and unofficial NFL offseason, the Saints have lost a coordinator and two positional coaches. It seems likely that offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael may get hired elsewhere, and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer may be gone before all is said and done.

By the time the 2012 regular season starts, the Saints may be taking the field with as many as five to six new coaches. The Saints may have a new defensive scheme and could have a couple different key coaches on offense.

However, the most important factor is that the head coach is still Sean Payton, and as long as that stays the same, then the Saints will be just fine.

Steve Spagnuolo: Ex-Head Coach Agrees to Become Saints' Defensive Coordinator

It didn’t take Steve Spagnuolo long to find another job.

Less than a month after being fired by the St. Louis Rams, Spagnuolo has agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints to become their defensive coordinator according to Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer:

Spagnuolo was the Rams head coach for the past two seasons, going a disappointing 9-21 under his watch.

What it Means

This is a terrific fit for both sides. Spagnuolo is a defensive minded coach that specializes in creating a pass rush in a 4-3 scheme, the one New Orleans currently implements.

It’s the perfect landing spot for Spagnuolo. He can quickly erase people’s memories of his failures with the Rams by becoming a coordinator for one of the most talented teams in the NFL. The Saints will surely be featured on plenty of national games throughout the year and he will have the opportunity to win a Super Bowl. This position could lead him to another head coaching opportunity down the line.

It’s an odd switch of sorts considering former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is on his way to St. Louis to take over that position.

What’s Next?

Spagnulo gained notoriety in the league as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants from 2007-2008, where his unit was a major factor in winning the ’08 Super Bowl. Before that he held various titles on the defensive end of the ball with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-to-2006.

Now he gets to turnaround a Saints defense that finished 30th in the league against the pass (259.8 YPG) and 12th against the rush (108.6 YPG) while allowing 36 points to the offensive challenged 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs.

With the roster beginning to age, there will be some tough personnel decisions to make over the next few months.
