The New Orleans Saints have given coach Sean Payton a contract extension through 2015. The team says Monday that Payton has agreed to the deal. Payton took over as coach in 2006 and led the Saints to the NFC South title. Saints vs. Packers: New Orleans' Offensive Game Plan for Thursday Night's Opener
The regular season is finally upon us! Thursday night the Saints and Packers will line up across from each other in a real football game—a game that matters.
Of course there will be tons of hoopla. And I do not want to dismiss that aspect of this game. But I want to point out the more schematic elements related to the Saints' success—or possibility of it.
Today I am dealing with the more interesting and dynamic matchup between Sean Payton and Dom Capers' units—the Saints offense and the Packers defense.
As with any game plan, there are multiple elements. I want to highlight the game plan in three main elements—base offense (first and second down), nickel (third down) and red zone—but not before outlining a basic scouting report of the opponents' defense—this week the Packers.

In the few short years I've been doing this, we had a first in 2010 with someone actually guessing right. Two Express-News sports staffers brave enough to publish their Super Bowl predictions last September picked the Green Bay Packers to make the Super Bowl - Andrew Festa and Chuck Blount - and Festa had the Packers winning it all. New Orleans Saints vs. Green Bay Packers: 4 Key Matchups in NFL Season Opener
With plenty of fanfare, the 2011 NFL season kicks off this week in Green Bay with the league's past two Super Bowl champions taking the stage.
When the New Orleans Saints step onto the field in Green Bay, it will mark the third time in five years that the Saints have played in the inaugural game of the year. The Saints' experience and familiarity in this game should help them ease into the game with confidence and composure.
The game will be televised on NBC on Thursday, September 8th.
Coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. CDT and kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT. The Packers are installed as four-point favorites.
