No. 1 pass rusher in draft is an open question

There are 31/2 months to go before the 2012 National Football League draft. We may need all that time to figure out the rankings of the pass rushers in the draft. In the immediate wake of the college football season, there is zero consensus among professional draft analysts outside the NFL on how the pass rushers should stack up. The Buffalo Bills , of course, will be studying the rushers intensely, because the position is the team's biggest need. It would be nice for the Bills if a pass rusher they loved was available when they pick 10th overall. The best one might be North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples. He's a 285-pounder and a phenomenal physical specimen. But he wasn't consistently great in 2011. After getting 10 sacks in 2010, he had 7.5 this year. It might be Alabama outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw, a 6-foot-2, 272-pounder who is a great football player but not a phenomenal speed rusher in the mold of Denver's Von Miller, last year's top rush rusher. Upshaw had 9.5 sacks this year.

ALEX SMITH SAVES THE DAY

Coach Jim Harbaugh roared in unison with the Candlestick Park crowd Saturday as Alex Smith and Vernon Davis combined on one of the best winning touchdowns in the 49ers' history, if not the NFL's. "How 'bout that! How 'bout that!" Harbaugh shouted from the sideline. With that 36-32 win over gunslinger Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, the 49ers (14-3) advanced to the NFC Championship game for the first time since the 1997 season.

Davis secures his place in 49er lore

You have to climb monumentally high to stake a place for yourself on the 49ers' playoff mountaintop, and Vernon Davis went there Saturday. Man oh man did he go there. He went as high as you can go, into rare and regal air, to the summit of all great 49ers touchdown-catch moments, and there is no franchise that has a comparable litany. Davis came, he saw, he caught, he cried, he conquered the New Orleans Saints.

Gregg Williams Now that the 2011 season is over for the New Orleans Saints, it's time to start looking ahead to next year. Perhaps the area that needs the most improvement is the Saints defense. Apparently, the players are not the only ones who may be different next year.
