Could Saints and 49ers Strike a Draft Day Deal?

saints 15th pick

Could the New Orleans Saints and their recent nemesis, San Francisco 49ers, strike a draft day deal?  It’s a possibility.  I read an CS Monitor article that the 49ers are attempting to jump into a top 15 slot in Thursday’s NFL Draft.

Why?  They have 13 draft picks (yes 13) and are seeking to consolidate them into “quality picks.”  Smart use of the draft and trades by GM Trent Baalke to gain a plethora of picks.  However, the Saints have only 5 draft picks available on Thursday.   If they allow the 49ers to trade up to their #15 slot, they could gain at least 3 picks from San Francisco.

This could be to the Saints favor by entertaining an offer from San Francisco.  Especially since many experts believe the strength of the draft would be in rounds 2 – 5.

What do you think Who Dats?

Saints’ Jimmy Graham Will Miss Pro Bowl Due to Wrist Surgery

New Orleans Saints fans won’t have the opportunity to see Jimmy Graham in the 2013 Pro Bowl.

According to Nola.com’s Mike Triplett, Graham recently underwent surgery to repair a wrist injury he suffered during the regular season.

Graham missed one game during the regular season, but it wasn’t because of a wrist injury.

Triplett reports that Graham had been battling the injury during the entire season, which led to a down season for the 26-year-old tight end.

Granted, the stud TE still finished the season with nearly 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns, but ESPN Stats & Info (h/t Nola.com) tells us that Graham led the NFL this year with 14 drops.

Graham just wasn’t himself this season.

He had just two games of more than 100 yards receiving and only one multi-touchdown day, which is unusual for the All-Pro TE.

With head coach Sean Payton assuming his normal duties with New Orleans next season, Graham should return to 2011 form as long as he’s healthy.

You can add Graham to the long-running list of tight ends who will miss the Hawaii trip this year.

Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez won’t make the trip (via ESPN) and Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots will sit out following surgery to repair a broken forearm (h/t NFL.com).

With the Pro Bowl already waning in the eyes of the NFL and its fans, the lack of star power in Hawaii from Gonzalez, Gronk and Graham doesn’t help the event’s stock for future years.

NFL Picks Week 16: Predicting Winners of Games with Biggest Playoff Implications

Scoreboard watching will be at an all-time high this week in the NFL with a handful of teams still fighting for their playoff lives.

Losing is no longer an option in Week 16, where wins will be at a premium and losses are sure to sting far worse than any that have come in the 2012 season prior to this week.

With so many teams playing with so much on the line, the action is sure to be intense as these games unfold.

Let’s take a look at three games, specifically, that have massive playoff implications and see how they’ll play out as well as a look at the entire playoff picture as a whole.

New Orleans Saints (6-8) vs. Dallas Cowboys (8-6)

Drew Brees and the Saints head to Dallas needing to win out—and get help—if making a fourth consecutive playoff appearance is in the cards.

Dallas, meanwhile, sits in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, because he simply can’t help himself, is talking about a Super Bowl run (h/t Dallas Morning News):

You can legitimately look at how the Giants played last year, what they did at the end of the year and how they took it all the way. And that’s not unrealistic to think that that can happen to you.

While Dallas is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, someone might want to remind Jerry that the Saints have won each of their last three games against the Cowboys in Dallas.

Defensively, the Cowboys have a major advantage over the Saints, though Dallas has been vulnerable to quarterbacks who have attacked the middle of the field against its safeties.

This one is going to come down to which quarterback makes fewer mistakes, and while Tony Romo has done a much better job of protecting the football in 2012 than Brees has, Romo doesn’t exactly have a long track record of success in pressure-packed games.

As much as it pains this lifelong Giants fan to do, I’m picking the Cowboys to beat the Saints and keep pace with the Washington Redskins in the race for the NFC East.

Dallas 31, New Orleans 24

New York Giants (8-6) vs. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)

While the Ravens have clinched a playoff spot, neither team has been able to lock down its respective division, and both are struggling heading into Sunday afternoon’s pivotal showdown.

The defending Super Bowl champions are coming off a deflating 34-0 loss at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15, the first time that the Giants have been shut out since Carolina blanked Big Blue 24-0 in the 2006 playoffs.

Baltimore, on the other hand, is hoping to avoid a four-game losing streak and clinch the AFC North with a win in Week 16.

Look for the Giants to try to get Eli Manning back on track early in this one with short passes and screens, while the Ravens figure to feed the Giants a heavy dose of Ray Rice, both on runs between the tackles and in the passing game.

New York’s run defense has been mediocre at best and its vaunted pass rush has been essentially non-existent. Both of those issues will come back to bite the Giants in this one, a game that many Giants fans cringed at the thought of when the schedule was initially released.

Baltimore 27, New York 24

San Francisco 49ers (10-3-1) vs. Seattle Seahawks (9-5)

Fresh off of a Sunday night scare at the hands of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers head to Seattle with their eyes on clinching a second consecutive NFC West division title.

The only problem is that nobody has been able to beat Seattle at CenturyLink Field this season, where the Seahawks own a shiny 6-0 record and will be looking to keep their chances of winning the division alive and well heading into the season’s final week.

Seattle, in the midst of a three-game winning streak, has outscored opponents over the last two weeks by a combined score of 108-17, becoming the first NFL team in 62 years to rip off back-to-back games where it scored at least 50 points in each.

While San Francisco has won each of its last four games against Seattle, including a 13-6 victory in San Francisco in Week 7 of this season, this is a drastically different Seahawks team than the 49ers faced earlier this season.

Seattle has the momentum and CenturyLink Field is one of the most difficult places for opposing teams to play.

Fantasy Football: Should You Start Jimmy Graham in Week 16?

New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was heading toward a second straight 1,000-yard, 10-touchdown season before he seemingly hit a wall. Graham has been dealing with a wrist injury that has, no doubt, been hindering his play.

With everything at stake, should you start Graham in your fantasy football championship game?

Before you even consider benching Graham, you will have to have a pretty serious backup. I’m talking a Greg Olsen or Dennis Pitta type. If you’re going to sit down one of the game’s best tight ends, you better have a great alternative.

Sure, Graham has failed to score a touchdown in three straight games.  Sure, he has not topped 60 yards since Week 10. You know, given his size and athleticism, that he is capable of breaking out in a big way any time he steps on the field.

Graham is averaging 49.2 yards per game in his past five games.  He has just one touchdown during that stretch. There aren’t many tight ends who average 50 yards per game. If you have one that is capable of doubling that mark, you almost have to stick with him.

Graham may have just one touchdown catch in his past five games, but he has 19 over the past two years. He is a nightmare to cover around the goal line. He’s too quick for linebackers and too big for defensive backs.

I know you’re frustrated that you haven’t been getting the big game from Graham lately. I suggest you ride it out and hope that he delivers you a championship next week against the Dallas Cowboys.

Week 15 NFL Picks: 3 Underdog Teams Sure to Win Today

Week 15 means it’s clearly crunch-time for all NFL teams, and like every week there will be upsets this Sunday. Here are three underdog teams sure to pull off their own upsets in one of the last weeks of the regular season.

San Francisco 49ers

Sure, head coach Jim Harbaugh’s team is playing the Patriots; that’ll just make the victory that much sweeter.

New England will be at home in Foxboro and are riding a seven-game winning streak, but the 49ers have what it takes to win this Sunday Night Football battle.

San Francisco has knocked off some of the NFC’s best teams in 2012, like Seattle, Minnesota, Green Bay and Chicago. One of the reasons this team has been able to win those crucial games is through its No. 2 ranked passing and rushing defense.

There’s no denying just how explosive the Patriots can be on offense with Wes Welker, Tom Brady and co., but they’re not unstoppable. New England struggled to get on track offensively against Seattle earlier this season and that same approach is likely what San Francisco will try to implement.

The 49ers will take a cue from their NFC West rivals and get into Brady’s head while surprising the Patriots defense with new starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys will face their long-time cross-conference rival in Pittsburgh and will lock up a key victory at home in the process.

Dallas has so far proven its recent history wrong with two victories this December in the regular season. When you consider the team’s comeback victories against Cincinnati and Cleveland in recent weeks, the ‘Boys have proven formidable.

The Steelers will be starting Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback for just the second time in a month. While Big Ben is as gritty a veteran as you’ll find in the NFL, he showed some rust in his game in Week 14.

Against the Chargers, Roethlisberger completed barely over half his passes and threw an interception. It’s clear he’s still getting back into his rhythm, which the Cowboys will capitalize on in this contest.

Ultimately, Big Ben’s struggles will be the downfall of his team and the Cowboys will defend their home turf down in Arlington in Week 15.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints have obviously had a miserable go of things this season but they’ll at least be smiling after playing spoiler to division rival Tampa Bay.

In Week 15, the Buccaneers became the first team to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in eight weeks. The Saints couldn’t have picked a better week to play against this young squad that is likely rattled after that disappointing defeat.

New Orleans still owns the NFL’s No. 2 passing attack lead by none other than Drew Brees. While it’s been proven he can’t win the game for the Saints on his own this season, he should post a good day against the Bucs passing D that ranks dead last in the league.

Brees can’t win every game for the Saints on his own, but he should be able to win this one for his team pretty much single-handedly.

Atlanta airport catches employee who egged Saints bus

When the Saints came marching in to Atlanta last Thursday for the Week 13 opener, they were met with a rude surprise as an airport worker — presumably a Falcons fan — egged their team bus.
The eggman, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was caught by authorities and has since quit his job.
DeAllous Smith, spokesman for the Atlanta Hartfield-Jackson International Airport, told the AJC that the suspect, who worked at a restaurant within the airport, was questioned by police.
Neither the person nor the restaurant were named by the airport, but the restaurant will be fined, the egger is no longer able to access the airport (at least as a worker), and the investigation is over.
It’s a friendly reminder that sneaking onto the airport tarmac to sling eggs at a football team’s bus is probably going to get you fired from your job, regardless of whether or not the opposing team finds it amusing.
So let’s pour one out for the eggman, shall we?

Monday Musings: I was wrong about Seahawks’ rookie QB Russell Wilson

What Wilson lacks in height, he makes up for with ability. (US Presswire)

•I was wrong about Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. The kid is damn good. I wasn’t sure if a 5-11 quarterback could be successful in the NFL. And when he only won one game on the road in his first five, I still wasn’t sure. But his play against the Bears Sunday convinced me that his kid could be a heck of a quarterback. His last drive in the fourth quarter to the go-ahead score was impressive, but his game-winning drive in overtime topped it. He won the game by throwing a touchdown pass to Sidney Rice, but he made some other really impressive throws — including one on the run on third-and-12. Wilson’s ability to get away from pressure and throw on the move was so impressive in this game. Wilson threw for 293 yards and ran for 71 against the Bears. Wilson has nine touchdown passes and no interceptions in the past four games.

• I said it last week, and I will say it again: Colin Kaepernick isn’t taking shots down the field. If he doesn’t do that, the 49ers have no chance to get to the Super Bowl. The 49ers scored 10 points in their loss to the Rams. Don’t tell me the quarterback position isn’t a part of the problem. I’m not saying Alex Smith is the greatest passer in the world, but he was doing well before he got hurt. Kaepernick has been just OK. And the gimmick fumble on the read option is essentially the play that cost the 49ers the Rams game. It was a horrible call by the staff, and bad execution by him. The move to make him the starter is one that will hang over this team’s head all season long. Anything less than an appearance in the Super Bowl, and coach Jim Harbaugh will face the heat for making this move.
• It might be time to slow down the talk that Chad Henne is the long-term answer in Jacksonville. He looked good in his first two starts, but not against the Bills. He was just a guy. He did have some drops, though.

• Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder isn’t playing well. And that’s being nice. He just seems to lack confidence. He makes too many mistakes. He won’t take shots down the field and he isn’t moving the team. Ponder completed 12 of 25 passes for 119 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, one in the end zone. It was a horrible throw across his body. Could the Vikings be considering going to Joe Webb?

• You have to give Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh credit. He hasn’t played great all season, but he was very good against the Colts. He spent the day in the backfield. He had four tackles for loss and a sack.
• If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I would never imagine Drew Brees having a day like he did against the Falcons last Thursday. He was picked off five times and never looked to be in a groove. He was jumpy and forced passes and made bad reads. There is no doubt the Saints miss Sean Payton.
• The Bengals have 39 sacks, the most in the NFL. They have six games with four or more sacks. This is a pass-rusher league now, which might be what helps get the Bengals into the playoffs. Carlos Dunlap had two sacks against the Chargers, including one late in the game that forced a fumble.
• What got into Brady Quinn? He looked like a competent NFL passer against the Panthers. He was 19 for 23 for 201 yards and two scores.
• Adrian Peterson ran for 210 yards against the Packers. His 82-yard touchdown run was special. And it all went to waste. It’s still amazing that it’s been less than a year since he tore up his knee. What a player.
• The Falcons are pretty close to clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC. With four games left, they lead San Francisco, their closest pursuer, by 2 1/2 games. It was a good weekend for the Falcons. They won and Chicago and San Francisco both lost.
• The worst move Jerry Jones made in the past couple of years was paying tackle Doug Free big money. He is horrible. The starting right tackle has become a turnstile.
• Rams rookie receiver Chris Givens is turning into a nice player. He had 11 catches against the 49ers.
• The Ryan Lindley experiment should be over in Arizona. He isn’t very good right now.
• The Jets should start Greg McElroy at quarterback. Why not?
• The Rams could not block 49ers defensive end Justin Smith. He had eight tackles, three for loss and one sack. He is a beast.
• I love the passing game more than most, but don’t you think the Ravens needed to run the ball more with Ray Rice against the Steelers. Rice ran it just 12 times. Come on, Cam Cameron.
• The game once again brings into question Joe Flacco as a big-game passer. He was 16 of 34 for 188 yards, one pick and big fumble late that led to the tying touchdown.
• So John Harbaugh has his own handshake issue now with Mike Tomlin? What is it with these guys? Tomlin gave Harbaugh the limp handshake after Sunday’s game. I will say this, and I was there: The Ravens acted like they won a Super Bowl when they beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh three weeks ago.
• Yeah, Andy Reid. Firing Jim Washburn will fix everything.
• All this time. All this money. All this effort. Does anybody care about Bounty-gate anymore? Aside from Jonathan Vilma trying to save his name, what’s it matter? That’s like a book that came out about last season. It’s old news.
• Bryce Brown. More proof you can find backs anywhere. Never pay them. Or over-draft them.
