NFL Picks Week 16: Predicting Winners of Games with Biggest Playoff Implications

Scoreboard watching will be at an all-time high this week in the NFL with a handful of teams still fighting for their playoff lives.

Losing is no longer an option in Week 16, where wins will be at a premium and losses are sure to sting far worse than any that have come in the 2012 season prior to this week.

With so many teams playing with so much on the line, the action is sure to be intense as these games unfold.

Let’s take a look at three games, specifically, that have massive playoff implications and see how they’ll play out as well as a look at the entire playoff picture as a whole.

New Orleans Saints (6-8) vs. Dallas Cowboys (8-6)

Drew Brees and the Saints head to Dallas needing to win out—and get help—if making a fourth consecutive playoff appearance is in the cards.

Dallas, meanwhile, sits in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, because he simply can’t help himself, is talking about a Super Bowl run (h/t Dallas Morning News):

You can legitimately look at how the Giants played last year, what they did at the end of the year and how they took it all the way. And that’s not unrealistic to think that that can happen to you.

While Dallas is in the midst of a four-game winning streak, someone might want to remind Jerry that the Saints have won each of their last three games against the Cowboys in Dallas.

Defensively, the Cowboys have a major advantage over the Saints, though Dallas has been vulnerable to quarterbacks who have attacked the middle of the field against its safeties.

This one is going to come down to which quarterback makes fewer mistakes, and while Tony Romo has done a much better job of protecting the football in 2012 than Brees has, Romo doesn’t exactly have a long track record of success in pressure-packed games.

As much as it pains this lifelong Giants fan to do, I’m picking the Cowboys to beat the Saints and keep pace with the Washington Redskins in the race for the NFC East.

Dallas 31, New Orleans 24

New York Giants (8-6) vs. Baltimore Ravens (9-5)

While the Ravens have clinched a playoff spot, neither team has been able to lock down its respective division, and both are struggling heading into Sunday afternoon’s pivotal showdown.

The defending Super Bowl champions are coming off a deflating 34-0 loss at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons in Week 15, the first time that the Giants have been shut out since Carolina blanked Big Blue 24-0 in the 2006 playoffs.

Baltimore, on the other hand, is hoping to avoid a four-game losing streak and clinch the AFC North with a win in Week 16.

Look for the Giants to try to get Eli Manning back on track early in this one with short passes and screens, while the Ravens figure to feed the Giants a heavy dose of Ray Rice, both on runs between the tackles and in the passing game.

New York’s run defense has been mediocre at best and its vaunted pass rush has been essentially non-existent. Both of those issues will come back to bite the Giants in this one, a game that many Giants fans cringed at the thought of when the schedule was initially released.

Baltimore 27, New York 24

San Francisco 49ers (10-3-1) vs. Seattle Seahawks (9-5)

Fresh off of a Sunday night scare at the hands of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers head to Seattle with their eyes on clinching a second consecutive NFC West division title.

The only problem is that nobody has been able to beat Seattle at CenturyLink Field this season, where the Seahawks own a shiny 6-0 record and will be looking to keep their chances of winning the division alive and well heading into the season’s final week.

Seattle, in the midst of a three-game winning streak, has outscored opponents over the last two weeks by a combined score of 108-17, becoming the first NFL team in 62 years to rip off back-to-back games where it scored at least 50 points in each.

While San Francisco has won each of its last four games against Seattle, including a 13-6 victory in San Francisco in Week 7 of this season, this is a drastically different Seahawks team than the 49ers faced earlier this season.

Seattle has the momentum and CenturyLink Field is one of the most difficult places for opposing teams to play.

Week 2 NFL Picks: Teams That Will Bounce Back After Week 1 Disappointments

The days following NFL Week 1 are also known as panic week. Up until Sunday, the cities of last week’s losers will retract their preseason predictions about their team and raise the alert level.

In New York, the Giants radio stations are questioning Tom Coughlin’s job. In New Orleans, they are trying to get Sean Payton to send an email to Drew Brees. In Indianapolis, they want Peyton Manning back.

Meanwhile, those losing teams are back to their practice facilities, working to rebound from their disappointing openers. Some will be able turn their fortunes around and turn off that panic button.

New Orleans Saints (at Carolina Panthers)

Don’t think Drew Brees and the Saints will go away quietly.

After a disappointing Week 1 showing against the Redskins at home, the Saints quarterback will make sure his team is focused heading into a divisional clash with Carolina.

The Carolina Panthers did not exactly look like a team on the rise in their Week 1 matchup against Tampa Bay.

The Panthers’ supposedly vaunted rushing attack was nowhere to be found, rushing for only 10 yards on seven carries. The best way to beat the Saints is to keep the football away from Brees; the Panthers can’t do that unless they don’t show up to the stadium.

Cam Newton will keep going through his growing pains in 2012 by throwing from behind most of this matchup. The final score won’t be indicative of his play, though. The Saints will run up the score until the clock strikes zero.

Prediction: New Orleans 42, Carolina 24

Seattle Seahawks (vs Dallas Cowboys)

The Seattle Seahawks were a trendy pick for a playoff berth a week ago. They’ll show off their potential in a Week 2 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Sure, Russell Wilson came back to Earth after several fantastic performances in the preseason, but all is not lost for the rookie quarterback. He’ll shake off the cobwebs with a better game at home in one of the toughest venues for opposing teams, CenturyLink Field.

The Cowboys defense looked fluky when everything went right for them against the Giants in the season opener. The Seahawks are a tough-nosed team that should knock Dallas off the blocks with their running game.

Marshawn Lynch better have his Skittles ready.

Add in Dallas having to travel out west to Seattle for this contest, and this looks like a classic letdown game for America’s Team.

Prediction: Seattle 24, Dallas 23

Pittsburgh Steelers (vs New York Jets)

As good as the New York Jets looked in Week 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers will look like the Steelers of old back in Heinz Field.

One of the best home teams year in and year out, it will be tough enough to beat Pittsburgh in their own building. After losing Sunday night against Denver, only some Tebow magic could save the Jets.

Just kidding.

The Jets, though, will have their hands full more so than last week’s matchup. Mark Sanchez is not Peyton Manning; we know this much. Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will be much more comfortable dialing up blitzes in this one.

The Jets offense everybody saw in the preseason, or lack thereof, will return. Stay tuned.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 27, New York 16

David Hawthorne, New Orleans Saints Agree to 5-Year Deal

The New Orleans Saints signed former Seattle Seahawks linebacker David Hawthorne to a five-year contract today, just a few days after John Clayton of ESPN.com reported that the Seahawks were close to re-signing their middle linebacker.  Michael C. Wright of ESPN Chicago.com reports that the Seahawks did have a two-year deal on the table for Hawthorne, but they rescinded it this afternoon according to a source.

The Saints recently signed MLB Curtis Lofton to a long-term contract, so they are set at linebacker. The Seahawks, on the other hand, are one of the most inexperienced teams in the league at linebacker right now, so they still have some moves left to make at the position. The Seahawks have no entrenched starters on the roster (KJ Wright started last year, but his position for 2012 is still up in the air), although 2011 draft picks K.J. Wright and Malcolm Smith did show promise in their rookie years.

The Seahawks seem to have three options at middle linebacker:

1. Install K.J. Wright as the starter—This would mean that they would need to find an outside linebacker in free agency or the draft. A player like UNC’s Zach Brown, Utah State’s Bobby Wagner or Nebraska’s Lavonte David would make for good targets in the second round as each has the speed the Seahawks like at the linebacker position.

2. Target Luke Kuechly at No. 12—Hawthorne leaving Seattle was bad news for Cincinnati Bengals fans that want Kuechly to fall to No. 17, as he is back to being a prime target in the first round. The Seahawks could also find good values at defensive end or guard, so Kuechly is far from a sure thing—if he is available.

3. Target an inside linebacker later in the draft—James-Michael Johnson of Nevada could be a third or fourth-round target, although the ILB class is not very deep, so this is a risky gambit. Perhaps Seattle head coach doesn’t think so, because he thinks that “There are close to 12 draftables with good grades”, according to CBSSports Pat Kirwan.

Whatever the plan, the Seahawks seemed to be the party that made the decision more than Hawthorne did, so they must have a next move at his position in mind.
