NFL and New Orleans Saints Linebacker Jonathan Vilma to Be Jaco Brand Ambassador

Elite sports performance brand JACO today announced the signing of star NFL linebacker Jonathan Vilma as their latest Brand Ambassador.

With the addition of Vilma, JACO has two champions as Brand Ambassadors, as former UFC light heavyweight champion "Suga" Rashad Evans also represents the brand.

Chief Executive Officer of JACO Glenn Robinson today spoke about the addition of Vilma to the JACO roster.

"It goes without saying that we are absolutely thrilled to welcome Jonathan Vilma to the JACO team," said Robinson through a press release.

"I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with such a talented athlete and gain his insight as we continue to craft the new JACO for hybrid training and introduce it to the world in 2012. With Jonathan's broad visibility and his depth of expertise as a high performance athlete, we are well on our way to establishing JACO as a major player in hybrid training."

Vilma's currently in his eighth season in the NFL and fourth with Saints. During his tenure in the league, he has 818 tackles, 9.5 sacks and 11 interceptions.

According to Vilma, the world's fastest growing sport is where he initially noticed the JACO brand.

"I discovered JACO after seeing it on some of the MMA guys, and I tried it, both in training and just in wearing it around in everyday life, and it performs," Vilma said.

"For my NFL workouts, JACO gives me the smooth fit that all athletes want, but it also allows for motion and movement, not restricting working muscles, which is so important in professional sports.

"I like it, it looks sharp, and I can relate to JACO. I think it has great potential if we put in the hard work, and since Glenn Robinson is backing it, I think the sky is the limit with this company."

In Vilma, JACO brings on a key member of the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl XLIV Championship team.

New Orleans Saints: NFL's Modern Day Tale of Redemption

Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans in 2005. The Crescent City and the Saints franchise, which was typically destroyed by other NFL teams, were forced to rebuild. And that's exactly what they did.

On December 31, 2005, a single play would change the course of two franchises. When Drew Brees, the San Diego Chargers' QB, injured his shoulder against the Denver Broncos, the long suffering Saints franchise was in the midst of a three-win season.

After New Orleans lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-13 the next day, the Saints completed their pitiful masterpiece and were rewarded for their poor play with the second pick in the NFL draft.

With such a high draft pick, the Saints only had two viable options: Mario Williams or Reggie Bush. However, the San Diego Chargers had a much harder decision to make about their future.

In 2004, the Chargers acquired Phillip Rivers, quarterback from N.C. State, from the New York Giants. The franchise believed that Rivers, not Brees, was the quarterback of the future.

However, the former Purdue standout played well from 2004-2005, making the Pro Bowl both years (once as an alternate). The injury Brees sustained in the final regular season game forced them to make a tough decision.

San Diego decided not to pay Brees the money he desired and handed over the reigns to Rivers.

After the Chargers declined to re-sign the QB, he began to talk with other teams. The shoulder injury scared away most people and only two teams showed major interest—the Saints and the Dolphins.

Although Brees wanted to sign with the Miami Dolphins, his shoulder surgery was deemed too risky by their medical staff. Nick Saban and the Dolphins decided to pass on Brees and instead signed Dante Culpepper as their starting quarterback.

Shortly after the Dolphins pulled out, Brees inked a six-year, $60 million contract with the New Orleans Saints. The black and gold seemed to be gambling on a player coming off serious surgery.

It would have been tough for Brees to disappoint the black and gold fanbase anymore than QB Aaron Brooks had in his recent tenure. As long as the former Charger QB did not throw the football backwards, everybody would be happy.

Once the Saints locked up their starting QB, the organization focused on the draft. With the second pick, they selected Reggie Bush, the Heisman trophy winner from USC.

Roman Harper, Jahri Evans, Zach Strief and Marques Colston were also selected in that 2006 draft. Hope replaced complacency in New Orleans and the black and gold faithful showed their approval by selling out the season for the first time in franchise history.

The Saints achieved much in the 2006 season, but the franchises’ dream of winning the city's first world championship came to an end in Chicago where the Bears defeated the Saints 39-14 in the NFC Championship game.

New Orleans made it to their first NFC Championship game behind their Brees-led high-powered offense. But it was not until the next season that they found their defensive leader.

In three full seasons with the New York Jets, Jonathan Vilma averaged 130 tackles a season, leading the league in 2005 with 169. Seven weeks into the 2007 campaign, he suffered a knee injury that left him sidelined for the remainder of the year.

During the offseason, the Jets traded Vilma to the Saints for a fourth-round pick and a conditional third-round pick in the 2009 draft.

Another NFL team decided a proven player is a risk because of injury—déjà vu for the Saints. Two years after that trade, they found themselves playing in the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts.

Vilma matched wits with Peyton Manning, the four-time league MVP, sometimes changing the defensive call multiple times before the snap. He won the battle against Manning and the Saints came out victorious, defeating the Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV.

Yes, other people besides Drew Brees, Reggie Bush and Jonathan Vilma were essential to the Saints' win in Miami. But those three, especially Brees and Vilma, turned in performances that will not be forgotten any time soon.

In just four years, the Saints went from lovable losers to perennial contenders. Two proven but wounded winners, Brees and Vilma, redeemed an organization mired in mediocrity for much of its history.

New Orleans Saints 2011-2012 Break Down: Who's Going To Make the Final Cut?

As (arguably) an elite team in the NFL, the New Orleans Saints don't have too many weaknesses on their roster. They have a great group of starters and solid depth. With the free agency period just about over and preseason coming close to an end, I'll try me best to break down each position for the Saints heading into the regular season.

As well as giving a grade to each position, I'll also be covering who the lock in starters are, those sure to make the team as a back up, players on the bubble and a bold prediction for each position.

Enjoy! Please leave some feedback, I would greatly appreciate it!

*Note* I put a lot of pro bowl nods, not because I think the pro bowl is that great of an achievement, but because I think the Saints will finally get national attention as a team.

Jonathan Vilma: Never Doubted Drew Brees Would Overcome Pick Six In Dramatic Win

Former Miami Hurricane Jonathan Vilma said he never doubted a forceful Brees would come blowing through the Georgia Dome before the night was over.

After Saints QB Drew Brees threw an uncharacteristic, careless, Brett Favre-like interception early in the fourth quarter that shifted momentum and gave the Atlanta Falcons a 14-10 lead, Vilma said he never doubted his unflappable quarterback's abilty to make a dramatic comeback.

With 14:14 remaining in the game and the Saints leading the Falcons 14-10, Brees, attempting to avoid a sack and make a play, flipped the ball into the waiting arms of Atlanta's Chauncey Davis who promptly returned it 26 yards for a touchdown.

"There was so much time left in the game," Vilma told ESPN. "We were just thinking about getting the ball back to Drew.

"Drew is an elite quarterback. He's one of the top three or four quarterbacks in the league. So, if he has one bad play...so what?

"Let's just move on from it. We know that he will get us a touchdown which he did," Vilma told the national television audience. "[Brees] had a great drive for us and ended up closing out the game for us with his play. So, we don't worry about plays like that."

The brainy and articulate Vilma, who quarterbacks Gregg Williams' intricate and aggressive defense, spearheaded a Saints unit that limited the Falcons to 75 net rushing yards—a far cry from the 200-plus yards Atlanta gained on the ground in a late September victory against New Orleans in the Superdome.

Getting the ball back to the offense and Brees was the familiar refrain in Vilma's answers to the national media's questions late Monday night.

"We felt like if we could get off the field that we could eliminate of the runs, a lot of the rushes from Michael Turner and a lot of the passes, the extra-extended plays, things like that." Vilma told ESPN. "And, the best thing was to give our offense the ball. That was the best thing."

When asked by ESPN's Steve Young why the Saints have not created as many turnovers as one year ago, Vilma said, "We practice it a lot. Practice in and practice out. We need to be more conscious of getting the ball, making plays on the ball, getting the turnovers and getting the offense the ball back.

"We understand that's our formula," said Vilma. "Get turnovers. Get our offense the ball back and let them score. If we do that, we'll win."

The victory clinched a second consecutive playoff berth for the Saints, who still have a very slim chance of earning the top-seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. That would require a Saints win over Tampa Bay and an Atlanta loss to Carolina.

Ninety-degree temperatures in Philly are more likely than a Panthers upset of these Dirty Birds.

As a result, the Saints will have to go on the road at some point if they are to successfully defend their Super Bowl championship.

The Saints are extremely good in rude environments.

"I think we understand that we're in a hostile environment. The only people you have are your teammates," said Vilma as he described the key to Saints away-from-home success.

"Second thing is execution. You have to rely on your technique. You have to rely on executing the plays, executing the defense, so you can win games like this against the best team in the NFC on the road."

As far as the strong possibility the Saints will enter the playoffs as a wild card, Vilma told ESPN, "Doesn't matter. We're in the dance. It doesn't matter."

New Orleans Saints vs. Baltimore Ravens: Road Warriors Meet Tough Hosts

Irresistible force meets immovable object.

That might describe Sunday's Ravens/Saints game. The Baltimore Ravens are 5-1 this year at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore and 11-3 over the past two years at home. The defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints went 7-1 on the road en route to a Lombardi Trophy in 2009 and are 5-1 on the road this season.

Something's gotta give.

When the dust settles and the smoke of battle clears late Sunday, it will probably have been decided by that old cliche' "in the trenches."

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis may not be the terror he once was back in the days when sportswriters were writing all those "speed kills" articles about him, but he's still better than most. A high football IQ has compensated for what Father Time has stolen from Lewis in the speed department.

"You look at it and say, 'This guy is 12 years younger.' I'm saying my body is 12 years more developed," Lewis told the Baltimore Sun recently. "I'm running and hitting these little kids, and I know they're not going to deal with 60 minutes of this."

After 15 years in the league, Lewis is still scaring the bejesus out of QBs and running backs but he won't be able to do that against the Saints' multi-dimensional offensive attack if the offensive line is winning the battle in the trenches—which the Saints O-line has been doing lately.

The Saints offense is rounding into 2009 form having scored 30-plus in five straight games. New Orleans ranks No. 3 in total offense, averaging 386 yards a game. And Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are both finally back in the fold.

"We'd like to keep that going. It was a matter of getting into a rhythm lately," Drew Brees told The Sports Network this week. "We had those injuries early on. We're just trying to get guys in and for everybody to find their role. When you look at our tight end group and our four wide receivers and our stable of running backs, we can just do a lot with our personnel groupings."

While the Saints offense draws most of the media attention, the New Orleans defense is quietly sitting at No. 6 overall in the NFL.

Unlike years past when the Saints lacked talent in the secondary, this defensive backfield is loaded with playmakers like Malcolm Jenkins, Darren Sharper, Tracey Porter, Jabari Greer and Roman Harper.

While Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is adept at making all the throws to one the league's best groups of wideouts, he must stay cognizant of a Saints secondary's ability to convert an errant pass into a pick-six with relative ease.

A loss would probably mean the end to New Orleans' hopes of winning the NFC South as Atlanta has a one-game division lead and goes against the mediocre Seattle Seahawks and their woeful defense this weekend.

Here's how The Sports Network sees it: "Both the Saints and Ravens need a victory this week to avoid falling behind in their respective division races with the regular season winding down. Both should be highly motivated and Baltimore will get a slight boost from playing at home. However, the Ravens have already struggled against one talented pass attack and now must deal with the rolling Saints. Like Schaub was last week, Brees might just be too much for the Ravens defense to handle."

The Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Saints 27, Ravens 20

Randy's Predicted Outcome: Saints 27, Ravens 24

New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees Reveals His Thoughts In Week 13's Final Seconds

Father Tony over at Our Lady of Hopeless Cases in the French Quarter was preaching on Sunday morning about how "faith without works is dead."

Seems some Saints fans in the congregation view God as a Divine slot machine these days; put in a few prayers and victories will flow forth in abundance.

However, as the good pastor pointed out, prayers can not always be substituted for a spunky QB who isn't afraid of living life on the edge with just the right amount of swagger and moxie mixed in.

A few things were known about these Cincinnati Bengals before the start of Sunday's game at Paul Brown Stadium - things that most certainly have the late Paul Brown turning over in his grave.

They can't run the ball. They can't protect Carson Palmer. They can't pressure opposing QB's (only 12 sacks all season.)

But, you see, these 2010 Saints are a New Orleans cardiologist's dream.

So, you could just count on the fact that the Bengals would do all three of these things well against the Saints and they did just that.

The Saints have "played down" to the competition all year (e.g. Arizona, Cleveland, Dallas.)

Alas, Saints fans could hardly be shocked when Cincinnati kicker Clint Stitser, a guy who was selling real estate a week ago, kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the last-place Bengals a 30-27 lead with 4:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Not too many years ago, this would have sent Saints fans heading to Pat O'Brien's for a little self-medication to ease the pain.

But, that was before Drew Brees and Sean Payton came to town.

The Saints final drive began on their own 32-yard line.

After rookie phenom Chris Ivory, who had 117 yards on 15 carries, ripped off a couple of impressive runs, Brees connected with the team's most lethal deep threat Robert Meachem for a 42-yard gain.

Two plays later, Reggie Bush came up two yards short of a first down and the Saints were faced with  fourth-and-2 on the Cincinnati 7-yard line with :34 seconds left in the game.

The obvious decision would be to attempt a game-tying field goal but the New Orleans Saints resorted to some acting that would have made Jack Nicholson proud.

Trickeration is what those kids who tap dance on Bourbon Street for change like to call it.

Brees called timeout and then he and Payton gesticulated wildly as if trying to decide what to do.

"I think we gave the illusion that we were really going to run a play," Brees told WWL Radio on Monday morning. "And, that's what caused them to take it seriously and to jump offsides."

The acting job continued as an exasperated Brees called an audible, putting his tight end Dave Thomas in motion.

"Just to make it seem like we were really running a play because there are plenty of times where I would say something that would be the actual terminology that we would use to run a play," said Brees on WWL. "And, so, that's the whole point in trying to sell it as best you can. We try to make it look as real as possible."

Everyone in the stadium seemed to know it was a con job with the exception of the Bengals defense.

Cincinnati defensive tackle Pat Sims flinched.

Saints guard Carl Nicks reacted and the Saints had new life.

"We practice getting someone else to jump offsides and then we just react," said Brees. "Worse case scenario is the officials say (Cincinnati) wasn't in the neutral zone or (the Saints) jumped first and then they move us back 5-yards and we kick the field goal."

On first-and-goal from the Bengals 3-yard line, Brees spotted his most reliable target, Marques Colston.

Chris Ivory is the running back. Brees up under center changes the play. Brees going to throw it and it's going to be caught- caught by Colston for the touchdown!!!

And these cardiac kid Saints had pulled out a 34-30 win over the lowly Bengals.

Some in the New Orleans media seem to think that all is not well.

They say that maybe the Saints have lost their mojo or something.

But, not local hero and father of the 'Who Dat Nation' - former Saints QB Bobby Hebert.

"It beats the alternative," says Hebert. If you're a Saints fan with heart problems just make sure to get your heart checked after every game."
