New Orleans Saints Mailbag: Why the Saints Defense Won’t Suck in 2013

20130110_mje_se2_768

What away game(s) will you attend this year? -Charles

I have no plans thus far to attend any away games. If I did, it would probably be the one against the Jets, since I could use it as an excuse to see my family and I’d have a free place to stay. But that’s right smack in the middle of busy season at work so I doubt it will happen. I’ve got a standing offer from the Glazer family to attend a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game that I should definitely cash in one of these days.

***

Do you have a favorite jersey? – Can I.

Probably my white Drew Brees jersey. How can you go wrong with that? I’m also quite fond of my old, worn out Marques Colston black jersey for obvious sentimental reasons. And in case you were wondering, I like the old Reebok jerseys better than the new Nike ones.

***

Since Payton surely won’t lead the pre-game chant on September 8, how cheaply opportunistic would it be to replace him with Gleason? – Sly

First of all, they’ve already had Steve lead the chant so it’s not like that would be such a far-fetched idea. But unfortunately, I’d be concerned at this point whether Gleason’s ALS has progressed passed the point that he’d physically be able to lift his arm and swing it down to start the chant. Incredibly sad.

***

I have a recurring dream of the Saints playing a defense with 3 safeties. Should I seek professional help? – Russ T.

That wasn’t a dream, that was an article I wrote two weeks ago. Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis have both alluded to the possibility of a defensive package utilizing three safeties.

Payton likes that Vaccaro has shown the ability to defend slot receivers as a nickel back, as he often did against spread offenses in college. This past week, general manager Mickey Loomis addressed the possibility of having Jenkins, Vaccaro and strong safety Roman Harper on the field simultaneously.

Before the draft, when we were talking about different scenarios,” Loomis said on WWL Radio, “one of the scenarios was that Malcolm could move into the nickel position because he has done that before and he does have good coverage skills.

2013 NFL Draft pick Kenny Vaccaro already has experience defending slot receivers. So does Malcolm Jenkins. Because of that versatility they both offer I am more than certain we’ll see a fair amount of three-safety nickel packages. Now wake up!

***

Question:I think this D going to suck (almost crying). Can you give me some serious arguments before i hang myself? – S.T.D.

I really don’t want you to hang yourself so have no fear because I’m about to save your life.
First and foremost it’s incredibly important to remember that the Saints are switching to a new 3-4 scheme; a scheme that Sean Payton realized needed to be implemented immediately just 3 days back on the job. They didn’t switch because some new defensive coordinator said so. Payton made the decision himself, then went out to find a defensive coordinator that best fits the job description. If the genius responsible for transforming the Saints into perennial winners thinks the team needs to switch defensive schemes after having the opportunity to study them from afar for an entire year, it’s probably a good idea. You get what I’m saying?
In addition, the guy Payton wound up hiring as his new defensive coordinator bears a striking resemblance in both coaching style and intensity to Gregg Williams. You remember old Gregg, don’t you? He was instrumental in helping the Saints win a Super Bowl in his first year on the job. An aggressive, opportunistic defense was exactly what the Saints needed in 2009 and it could still very well be exactly what they need in 2013.
I also think this was one of the better NFL Drafts the Saints have had in recent years. No head scratching selections, no wasteful trade ups. On paper it looks like every pick the team made was a smart one.
Everything in my gut tells me the Saints defense isn’t going to suck in 2013. I’m not saying they’re going to be amazing, but that’s the best part: they don’t even need to be. Here’s a fun fact: the Saints defense was only ranked 25th overall when they won the Super Bowl in 2009.
The truth is, it’s their high-powered offense that runs the show and wins the games; it’s up to the defense to simply not lose it.
Hopefully you feel a little less suicidal now than you did three minutes ago.

New Orleans Saints 2013: Defining a Successful Season

20130516_mjr_su5_092

With each new NFL season comes restored hope for fans of every team in the league, excited about the possibility of success for their favorite franchise. But depending on the team, expectations are most likely set accordingly.

Jaguars fans are probably just hoping their team doesn’t leave town in the middle of the night while Patriots fans likely expect nothing less than an undefeated Super Bowl run. Those are opposite ends of the spectrum.

But what about the Saints? Today I raise a simple question in the interest of starting a good-natured debate: What is the one barometer of success for the Saints in the coming season?

In other words, what needs to happen for you to deem the 2013 Saints season a success? Do they absolutely have to win the Super Bowl? Or would you simply be happy if everyone gets a participation trophy at the end of the year? Maybe the only thing that matters to you is that the Saints destroy the Falcons twice a year?

The potential answers are endless and I can’t wait to hear them. For me, a trip to the NFC Championship Game would be my ideal scenario, but anything short of a playoff berth would just be disappointment.

What about you?

Kenny Stills Reps Saints At NFLPA Rookie Event

155990871

The NFLPA and a number of corporate partners held their annual Rookie Premiere Event in Los Angeles this weekend, in which the rookies signed memorabilia, gave interviews, and participated in rookie trading card photo shoots. Twenty-five of the 32 NFL teams were represented by players from this year’s draft class, and Kenny Stills of the Saints made the trip.

SB Nation sent a few guys to cover the event, and Ryan Van Bibber (who covers the Rams for Turf Show Times) tweeted out some words from Stills on Friday, which will add to the Kenny vs. Kenny storyline that CSC is keeping an eye on:

Van Bibber fleshed out the quotes a little bit more in THIS QUICK HIT from SB Nation from Friday afternoon that’s also on our front page right now.

“Kenny and I are actually really cool,” Stills said Friday at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere. “We’re trying to figure out a way for people to differentiate us because we’re both light skinned and tattooed and named Kenny.”

SB Nation’s Dan Rubenstein tweeted out a link to this first ever pic of Stills in his Saints uniform near the autograph table:

Dan also noticed this during one of the earlier rookie events…

Here’s Stills geeting cheeky:

…then retweeting Rubenstein’s pic of him (look at his cartoon profile pic…)

And fun in the sun at the Rose Bowl…

So, with Stills and Vaccaro getting the rookie trading card treatment so far so far, it made me think of my humble football card collection, and through the wonder of cell phone cameras, my artistic flair, and uploading asset technology on CSC, I bring you this “all access tour” only available to you privileged few…

But first, some context.

I began collecting football cards at the end of high school (1988-89), and used to buy individual packs at retail locations (Wal-Mart, Target, grocery stores), then moved up to actual entire boxes of packs, too. I’d rip open the packages, and quickly sift through the cards to find and set aside all the Saints cards, then the rookie cards, and then build my annual sets for Pro Set, Score, and Upper Deck and store them in cardboard boxes sized for them and put the special cards in individual hard plastic sleeves. I’d make lists of which cards I had, which ones I still needed complete the sets, and I enjoyed this hobby for a few years.

As I got older, I had less disposable income and less time on my hands, so I drifted away from it. But then with the excitement of the Ricky Wiliams draft of 1999, and the fact that I went to a Kentucky Derby party where it was rumored Ricky Williams MIGHT BE THERE, I purchased some of his rookie cards and stashed them and a sharpie in my pocket, hoping to get an autograph or two. Well, he never showed up, but my interest in football card collecting sure did.

Ever since then, I have purchased Saints rookie cards and team sets each year. One year, I went a bit hog wild and Mrs. H bought me a Saints collector set of over 500 random Saints cards, a special binder, and three-hole clear plastic pocketed protective sleeves, which allowed me to get things all organized – yay! (Usually I’m pretty laid back, but from this work and my comic book collection, I see that I do have the capacity to be an OCD nerd sometimes.)

My collection has grown from the one binder to a second, and they sit on my Saints Shelf next to my bed (the spine on the blue one reads “Who Dat? The New Orleans Saints (and St. Louis Rams) Football Card Collection):

Saintsshelf

A cool Crackerjack-prize reflective Saints sticker adorns the front of the gray binder, which had to be purchased last year:

Binder2

I bought my 2012 Saints team set cards in November, but when the season got ugly at the end, I forgot all about opening them and they sat until I put them in their rightful places on Saturday morning.

2012unopened

This page shows some of the first Pro Set Saints cards I ever bought (and a couple of oldies but moldies that came in that 500-card Saints set – but note that I do not consider Tony Galbreath “O & M” – that’s for Dave Wilson and Russell Erxleben).

Firstproset

This is a double-page spread of my original binder that shows how I organize the cards by year and position groups. The most recent year is at the front, and from right to left/back to front, I first put rookies, then defense, then offense, then special commemorative cards.

Samplebinderpage

Know who gets a lot of cards made of him each year? Drew Breeeeeeeees!!

Drewbreeees

And who can forget these guys?

Domepatrol

Man, were these guys good. They deserve some kind of monument, mountain, statue, or something to honor their efforts for the Saints. We should all talk about this sometime. And dig that shot of Ricky blasting Jim Kelly in the snow in 1989. “Hey! Where’s the ball?”

* * *

I know some of you collect these, too, so let’s just lay all our cards on the table and talk it up! Did you collect cards as a kid? How about now? Are you a hard core investor-collector, or just a Saints fanboy/girl?

I’m also prepared for the slings and arrows of nerd jokes. One of my nerd powers is that nerd jokes don’t even come close to bothering me, EVER, and I take it all in good fun, so feel free to give me your best shots. It will not be received as a personal attack, but please be mindful of the other Community Guidelines as you strive for clever and funny visuals and wordplay.

Reggie Bush "Can’t Quit Saints"

160469652

Former New Orleans Saints tailback Reggie Bush compared his current Detroit Lions offense to that of the Saints during his time with the franchise. Here is an excerpt from Bush’s interview with NFL AM on NFL Network:

“As far as from an offensive perspective it’s a lot like what we did in New Orleans,” Bush said of the team he won a Super Bowl with in 2009. “It’s a lot of spread-open passing. Obviously we can attack downfield, and with the running game, a lot of screens, draws and stuff like that. Basically what I did in New Orleans, so running this offensive system has been pretty easy for me.”

Reggie, c’mon now. It’s over. You had some laughs, we had some laughs, but look we’ve been done for a while. We broke it off because we just couldn’t depend on you. We remember when you went down to Miami because she gave you that chance we weren’t willing to commit to. That was cool and we were happy for you but even she broke up with you after a while.

Now you’re hooking up with someone who reminds you of us? I know you would never do that, you’re not like that, right?

New Orleans Saints Roster History: What’s In A Name?

20130221_mje_ss1_1303

Last week, when the Saints picked up oft-injured defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui, Dave noted the high concentration of vowels in the Samoan’s name.

And in April’s draft, the team nabbed an offensive tackle with a name that sounds a bit ominous, TERRON ARMSTEAD (who had a freaky-great athletic performance at the Combine in March), as well as a RUFUS! (Johnson), a defensive end from tiny Tarleton State. FYI – this Rufus is only the second Rufus ever on the Saints all-time roster (Rufus Porter played LB from 1995-96).

All these players have been added to a roster that already includes the interestingly-named and/or fun-to-say Junior Galette, Akiem Hicks, Martez (‘Tez) Wilson, Isa Abdul-Quddus, Baraka Atkins, Saalim Hakim, and Travaris Cadet, among others.

This pattern did not go unnoticed by your ever-vigilant HansDat, and with this inspiration tickling the creases of my brain, I decided to comb through the team’s all-time alphabetical roster last night to uncover other compellingly characteristic, original, outstanding, or otherwise noteworthy names of players or coaches who have been a part of the Saints colorful history.

The Coaches

Jim Champion (with a name like that, how could he lose? Try being the Saints defensive coordinator from 1971-72. That’ll do it, for sure.) was a former NFL linebacker and CFL head coach who was brought in by the second Saints head coach, J.D. Roberts. The revolving door almost hit him in the rear when he was pushed back through it after his squads allowed nearly 25 and then 26 points per game under his tutelage. In ppg adjusted for inflation, that’d be like giving up over 35 a game in today’s NFL.(No citation, just HansDat’s cold, hard humor-factiness.)

From 2003-2005, the Saints had one Ty Knott on the coaching payroll (and as long as he was with his brother, Fred, I bet he NEVER had trouble getting served in a bar), and the unfortunately-named Dick Wood patrolled the sidelines from 1976-1977 (can you imagine the jokes he suffered in his adolescence?).

The final coach I’d like to mention here is perhaps my absolute most favorite Saints coach name of all time: Zaven Yaralian. The Mike Ditka Era didn’t have too many bright spots (although this post practice interview was pretty funny), but at least I greatly enjoyed saying this guy’s name while he served as Iron Mike’s defensive coordinator from 1997-98). Just say it a few times yourself, and let the syllabication and rhythm just roll off your tongue.

The Players

In the “playful player names of the early years” department, I offer up Happy Feller (a kicker from 1972-73), and a handful of wide receivers from the 1970s and 80s: Jubilee Dunbar, Jitter Fields, Tinker Owens, and Speedy Thomas.

One person’s rhythmic bonanza of names can be particularly devastating and nightmarish for certain past and present members of the New Orleans sports radio media scene, so these guys are from my “names that would give Buddy D, Drunk Bobby, and Hokie fits” section. Here are some names that even you may not want to try to say three times fast: Ink Aleaga (LB, 1997-99), Onome Ojo (a wide receiver from 2001 who also joins the fun “all-alliterative” name group with 2009′s TE Darnell Dinkins), Dino Philyaw (RB, 1999), Olaniyi Sobomehin (FB, 2008) and Pio Sagapolutele (DT, 1997).

Two names that I appreciated as cool, football-sounding names belong to Van Jakes, a cornerback from 1986-88, and Renaldo Turnbull, the defensive end/linebacker from 1990-96, who would be in the Hall of Fame if his talent was anything close to how well his name fits a pass-rushing specialist.

Closing out this nomenclature nonsense are the sweetly-named Babe Laufenberg, a backup QB on the team in 1986, and the buggy Carl Roaches, a kick returner from 1985 whose last name guaranteed that he had to play in New Orleans for at least one year.

* * *

Before I kick it to everyone in the comment section to share your thoughts on these names and any others of this same ilk you recall that I may have missed, let me toss out a couple of trivia questions that my research prodded:

1) There are four letters in the alphabet that NO PAST SAINTS PLAYERS last names begin with. Can you name them?

2) Who is the only past Saints player whose last name begins with the letter “U”? Extra credit awarded for naming his position and ballpark of his years with the team.

Please search only your brain for these answers…NO INTERNET-ASSISTED ANSWERS will be accepted.

See you in the comment section!!
