Da Chronic's Got Talent: Eight is Enough

We're ready to present another candidate in our search for fresh new front page talent here on Canal Street Chronicles, to make the best Saints blog on the net even better.

In case you missed the introduction to our little talent search here, be sure to read it first before continuing. Remember, any and all criticism must be 100% constructive and positive in nature. Keep Da Chronic classy!

Please welcome the next contestant of Da Chronic's Got Talent! S/he is willing to contribute every other week and possibly once weekly in the future.

It's Time to Put the 2011 Season to Bed

Two weeks ago at this very moment I was walking around Candlestick Park getting taunted because of my very low-key Saints warm-up jacket. Did I mention there's a police observation tower in the parking lot that looks like it was designed by the same architect (and for the same reason) as the observation tower at Folsom Prison? Now I'm sitting here on a Saturday afternoon watching college basketball and trying to move on without any meaningful football until August. As proud as I am of Brees, Graham, Bushrod, Evans, and Nicks, have you ever sat and watched an entire Pro Bowl game? Me neither. And seriously, Giants-Patriots? I'll watch but I refuse to enjoy.

Thanks to DirecTV I haven't missed a single Saints snap in years (if you don't count the Tampa Bay blow-out a few weeks ago Fox aired as a national game and then cut away from mid-way through the third quarter so we could sit on the edge of our seats watching Jared Allen almost break Michael Strahan's sack record). I'm also lucky enough to travel to see my team play a few times a year.

Well the Candlestick game didn't work out so well, and now I'm surrounded by Giants fans telling me they knew all along Eli could walk on water, or Jets fans hoping Peyton will put Mark Sanchez out of a job. Yes, I am a Saints fan in New Jersey. And I'm reminded that the Saints lost to the 49ers every time I turn on the television or leave my house and am forced to look at those giant inflatable Giants on everyone's lawn.

I'm a fan. I'm not a statistics guy, and I'm not a fantasy league guy. I am the guy who shuts down all non-football forms of life every Sunday from September until January. I am also the guy who has given my family no other reasonable choice but to be Saints fans. There we sit every Sunday in our jerseys (I'm Vilma, she's Colston, and the progeny is Jenkins), 1500 miles from NOLA, hoping the satellite doesn't go out as we cheer our fool heads off -- or wonder what the heck just happened (as in the case of the Rams game in October).

But enough about me, let's get back to the Divisional game. I saw it twice, once in person with the drunk guy behind me hitting me on the shoulder every time the Niners did something good, and once when I got home. The first time I was pretty depressed (and concerned about my personal safety), but the second time I was amazed at how good we actually played and how hard San Francisco had to work -- in spite of the 17 points we spotted them -- to squeak out a miracle victory at the last second. I'll leave the second-guessing to the second-guessers, and I'll leave the arm-chair quarterbacking to the arm-chair quarterbacks. Sure I'd like to win another Super Bowl, but I've been on this ride since Archie was under center and I'm still enjoying the fact that our team is really freakin' good.

Between the drunken and hostile Niners fans, and the screaming young lady in the #9 jersey, gold foil wig and fleur-de-lis face paint who didn't know the names of any of the other Saints besides Brees, my experience at Candlestick was truly once in a lifetime (because I'll kick and scream if anyone ever tries to take me there again).

I am looking forward to an off-season of improvement (hopefully), and next year I'll be at MetLife Stadium when we play the Giants, but mostly I'm just enjoying the ride and appreciating being part of something only a few football fans get to be a part of -- an organization that cares about winning.

It's not always easy rooting for a team halfway across the country, but it sure is fun being a citizen of the Who Dat Nation. Even when football is over until August.

Da Chronic Podcast: Another Offseason Survival Series

Our second offseason podcast of the week!

Dave recaps Canal Street Chronicles' search for more front page contributors. Dave and Ralph also try to figure out if the Saints make the Super Bowl in 2013, how many Saints fans will fill the Dome for Media Day?

The boys also try to guess who the Saints will target in free agency on the defensive line. Should we be worried that Carl Nicks admitted the Saints haven't started contract talks? Should we be excited or scared Madonna has promised to 'gay up' the halftime show?

And Dave mocks our new podcast email address: [email protected]. What's wrong with hotmail Dave? Total email elitist.

By the way, feel free to email us with questions and comments. We'll even read good emails on our next show!

Da Chronic's Got Talent: Seventh Heaven

Can you believe we're still going? I still can't get over the turnout. Here is another hopeful candidate in our search for fresh new front page talent here on Canal Street Chronicles, to make the best Saints blog on the net even better.

In case you missed the introduction to our little talent search here, be sure to read it first before continuing. Remember, any and all criticism must be 100% constructive and positive in nature. Keep Da Chronic classy!

Please welcome the next contestant of Da Chronic's Got Talent! S/he is willing to contribute twice a month.

Behind Enemy Lines: Rewind DAT.... I'm not done yet!

I know that we are supposed to be moving on from the Saints heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but damn it I'm not done yet! You see I'm like all of you other Saints fans out there; ridiculously conspicuous with my gear, yelling "WHO DAT!" arbitrarily in random establishments, and let's not even talk about my 2007 "Saints Black" Tahoe with license plates that read: NAWL1NS on the rear of the truck, and SAINTS on the front.

But there is one difference between you and me, my fellow Saints-FANATIC: I am behind enemy lines. Surrounded by our arch nemesis, yeah you know who I'm talking about...I know your blood boils just as much as mine when their team cycles through on one of those NFL Play 60 commercials. The music starts: "Watch who's comin' at you why? Who's got the power? Watch who's comin' at you if you might allow her..". It's all good for a second, then you see that face you recognize, Matty-Ice (As he is anointed by his delusional cult following). When I see it, it takes every bit of inner "woosah" channeling to not run to the garage, grab a gold can of spray paint, and better my neighbors' homes with giant fleur-de-lis' on their front doors. Half a block should make me feel better, right? I mean that is at least 10-12 newly Saints style decorated homes in a matter of minutes.

But let's cut to the chase. I'm not done yet! I'M NOT OVER THE LOSS to the 49ers. But I do feel a smidge better. You know why? Because they loss to NY the same way they beat us, turnovers. And to make it even sweeter they were kicking game turnovers. Mr. Karma's a B here saying, I love you Kyle Williams - you are my hero. I mean c'mon man, no Roby fumble and no Sproles fumble equals we are all trying to figure out what outfit we are wearing to Lucas Oil Field. I was all ready to step out in my gold sneaks, khaki shorts, and top it off with a custom Lil' Doogie black n' gold t-shirt that would read "Say Bruh, We Real Huh?!"

Seriously though, did I miss something in the local media? Nobody else is talking about this? I mean are we all just sitting lotus style healing, while our last and most important game is to be played in a little over a week without us? Well I don't know about you, but Giants vs. Patriots? Been there, done that. I'm not hating on them. Actually I'm glad Eli and Brandon, the natives, may get fitted with the coveted hardware. But this was our year! We broke every record, peaked at the right time, and had our eye on the prize. Now I have to spend the next seven months listening to the national media talk about how Tom "Terrific" (gag) or Eli (ehh) have more Super Bowl rings then Brees...

"Watch who's comin' at you why? Who's got the power? Watch who's comin' at you if you might allow her...".

...I'm out, I got house calls to make. Fluer-de-lis' are in high demand here apparently!

I'M NOT OVER IT..... You'll be hearing more from me behind the lines....

NFL Free Agency 2012: Potential Pass Rushers for the Saints

If there is one thing I'm willing to bet we can all agree on, it's that the Saints could really benefit from having a dominant pass rusher. Wouldn't ya know it, this year's NFL free agency crop has a number of players that fit the bill. So let's start talking about potential free agents whom the Saints might consider signing and what better place to begin than with the defensive end position.

Below is a quick look at some of the defensive ends that may potentially be available when the free agency period begins on March 13th. Let's see who might be making a visit to town. Then talk about it in the comment section.

The Big Names

Mario Williams - DE/OLB - Texans

6'6" - 283 lbs. - 27 years old

Sacks Interceptions Tackles
G Sacks YdsL Int Yds IntTD Solo Ast Total
2011 - Mario Williams 5 5 29 0 0 0 10 1 11

Williams only played in five games last season and he still notched five sacks, on pace for a 16 sack season until he tore his pectoral muscle. Money is tight for the Texans and teams like the Bills and Chargers have already expressed interest in Williams. If the Texans don't use the franchise tag, a big contract could easily lure him out of Houston.

Calais Campbell - DE - Cardinals

6'8" - 300 lbs. - 25 years old

Sacks Interceptions Tackles
G Sacks YdsL Int Yds IntTD Solo Ast Total
2011 - Calais Campbell 16 8 64 1 0 0 53 19 72

I'm noticing that Campbell seems to be the player of choice among many here on Canal Street Chronicles. And why not? He's big, he's young and he's good. Unfortunately, it looks like the Cardinals will use their franchise tag on him if they don't get a deal done before the deadline.

Cliff Avril - DE - Lions

6'3" - 260 lbs - 25 years old

Sacks Interceptions Tackles
G Sacks YdsL Int Yds IntTD Solo Ast Total
2011 - Cliff Avril 15 11 92 1 4 0 29 7 36

The athletic Avril is coming off a breakout year and will command a big pay day. Since the Lions are tight against the cap, they might have to let him walk. I would cream my pants if the Saints landed him. This guy is crazy good, yo.

Robert Mathis - DE - Colts

6'2" - 245 lbs. - 30 years old

Sacks Interceptions Tackles
G Sacks YdsL Int Yds IntTD Solo Ast Total
2011 - Robert Mathis 16 9.5 71.5 0 0 0 29 16 45

Despite switching to a 3-4 defense this offseason, Colts new defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano doesn't think Robert Mathis will have any trouble converting. That means the Colts may be planning on re-signing him. It would be a good get for the Saints, though.

John Abraham - DE - Falcons

6'4" - 263 lbs - 33 years old

Sacks Interceptions Tackles
G Sacks YdsL Int Yds IntTD Solo Ast Total
2011 - John Abraham 15 9.5 70.5 0 0 0 25 10 35

Yes, that John Abraham. It appears his time in Atlanta is all but officially over so the question becomes: where will he go next? Why not to the team he tormented so many times for so many years? I know the whole former Falcon thing might take some getting used to but hey, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Abraham has certainly lost a step but let's face it, he's still probably better than anything the Saints currently have. He should come reasonably priced as well.
