CCR 67: Rivals Smack Talk Edition

Cat Crave Radio is back with Episode 67! nbsp;This past week saw the end to the Julius Peppers saga for the Carolina Panthers – finally! nbsp;And there was news other than that, believe it or not.

We tried something different this week. nbsp;We invited bloggers for rival teams to join us for some smack talk. nbsp;Two of them took the bait. nbsp;Dustin Staggers of The Pewter Plank representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Sean McNally of Blogging Dirty representing the Atlanta Falcons joined us. nbsp;The New Orleans Saints couldn’t provide us with a blogger brave enough to take part.

The segment followed a simple format – we ask a question and they ask a question followed by one minute of smack talk. nbsp;Check it out especially since we took the liberty of laying it on thick.

We also threw in a Rant Or Rave. nbsp;Our topic this week – Twitter and its prevalent use among some NFL players.

Our old friend Nick Yeoman is still being prevented from joining us thanks to technical issues. nbsp;But don’t forget his video blogs over on You Tube!

It’s all in the latest episode. nbsp;Take a listen and feel free to comment below.

Saints Will Not be Top in Passing Yardage in 2009

Now after the cursing and swearing is over, you can take a look at what my reasoning is. In 2008 the Saints led the league in passing not just because of Drew Brees great arm but because the offense had to rely on it too much. With a lacking running game and a Read more of SaintsNews.net…

Place Your Bets: Teams Most Likely to Commit Major Rules Violations

lt;pgt;lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;lt;br /gt;
Ray Melick of the Birmingham News commented Sunday on an online sports betting site lt;a href=http://blog.al.com/ray-melick/2009/06/melick_more_ncaa_violations_yo.htmlgt; that is now giving odds on who’s the most likely program to get hit next with major NCAA rules violations. lt;/agt; Relax, Alabama. You’re not at the top of the list, but you did make it. And chill, Auburn. Despite being #3 all-time in major infractions, you didn’t even make the top 25. Speaking on behalf of the Auburn nation, let me be the first to demand a recount.lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;Actually, USC tops the list at 8-1 odds. With the recent troubles with O.J. Mayo and the long-simmering Reggie Bush Incident (RBI), the Trojans are the hands-down favorites in this category. Evidently, the odds must extend to a program as a whole with any sport, not just football. The top ten:lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;lt;br /gt;
1) USC 8-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 2) Ohio State 10-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 3) Florida 10-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 4) Memphis 10-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 5) Ole Miss 10-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 6) North Carolina 10-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 7) Conneticut 12-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 8) Michigan State 12-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt; 9) Florida State 12-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;10) Alabama 13-1lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;lt;br /gt;
Somebody brave go to the website that is mentioned in the link and chase down the top 25. I’m too skerred to go to a gambling website myself. We can only assume that active investigations are already calculated into the equation. lt;/pgt;

lt;pgt;Perhaps a good sucker’s bet might be Tennessee, which has 14-1 odds, but remember, this list is for lt;emgt;major violations onllt;/emgt;lt;emgt;ylt;/emgt;. Fortunately, Lane Kiffin seems to not only be making new friends and influencing people, but only racking up minor violations thus far.lt;/pgt;

Kim amp; Reggie spent some of their money

Reggie Bush helped his honey Kim Kardashian to a little retail therapy at the Chanel boutique the other day because Lord knows, the two of them needed to relax and unwind a little after all the hard work they have put in attending every club opening and awards show on planet Earth the last few months… (Side note: Remember when football players used to do manly things?)

Inside the Numbers

In the weeks leading up to the start of the New Orleans Saints’ 2009 training camp, NewOrleansSaints.com will take an inside look at some interesting facts and figures of various high-profile players on the Saints’ roster.

QUARTERBACK DREW BREES

Height: 6-0Weight: 209NFL Experience in 2009: 9th SeasonYears with Saints: 4th SeasonCollege: PurdueSAINTSATIONAL NOTES:

Since arriving in New Orleans in 2006, Brees has provided the Saints with the three most prolific seasons of quarterback play in club history, throwing for 4,000 yards or more each season and ranking at the top or among NFL leaders in virtually every passing category. In 2008, Brees continued his assault on the team and NFL record books with his finest season as a professional, producing some of the top numbers in league history. In his campaign, Brees, voted as one of five team captains for the second consecutive year, completed 413 of 635 (65%) passes for 5,069 yards with 34 t

Better Know A Cardinal: Meet Your New Defensive Tackles

lt;pgt;The staff of Card Chronicle has lt;strikegt;been commanded by Mikelt;/strikegt; put our collective heads together and decided that a good way to pass the days until the lt;a href=https://twitter.com/Kragthorpe/status/2402451747 target=_blankgt;first practice on August 6th lt;/agt;would be to get to know the newest members of the Louisville football Cardinals, especially since many of them will likely be logging significant minutes this season.amp;nbsp; We’ll start our journey with the new Defensive Tackles, JUCOs all.lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;bgt;Peni Fiu’angaihetault;/bgt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;And who better to start with than our only 4-star recruit according to lt;a href=http://louisville.scout.com/a.z?s=17amp;p=9amp;c=8amp;yr=2009 target=_blankgt;Scout.comlt;/agt;, the Ari-Wolfe-Is-Never-Going-To-Pronounce-My-Name-Right-Award-Winning Peni Fiu’angaietau.amp;nbsp; Sound it out, Ari.amp;nbsp; Anyway, Peni comes to us from Phoenix CC and will have two years of eligibility.amp;nbsp; At 6-2, 270, Peni would seem to need to bulk up a bit to be effective in the middle, but because LT Walker can’t play every down and be useful in the 4th Quarter and because the only other DT I’d heard of before starting this project is lt;a href=http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/players/36574/Tyler_Jessen class=sbn-auto-linkgt;Tyler Jessenlt;/agt;, I imagine we’ll hear announcers valiantly trying to prounounce Peni’s name a lot next year.amp;nbsp; With reported offers from Cal, Oregon and Utah, I believe Peni is also the most-sought-after recruit to commit to us, so beating out those schools is somewhat of a coup for Krag amp;amp; Co.lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;a href=http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194432/fef46863c6c7102ec19846c18ffdc03c.jpggt;lt;img class=photo src=http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194432/fef46863c6c7102ec19846c18ffdc03c_medium.jpg alt=Fef46863c6c7102ec19846c18ffdc03c_medium /gt;lt;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;via lt;a href=http://www.pc.maricopa.edu/data/2576/ROSTER/fef46863c6c7102ec19846c18ffdc03cgt;www.pc.maricopa.edult;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;Peni’s lt;a href=http://www.njcaa.org/colleges_college_stats.cfm?sid=11amp;divid=0amp;slid=5amp;seasonselect=421amp;collegeid=1247amp;report_id=2804amp;requesttimeout=500 target=_blankgt;stats lt;/agt;are somewhat impressive, as he was third on the team in total tackles and second in sacks.amp;nbsp; He was tied for 2nd on forced fumbles….with 6 other dudes…with 1 each.amp;nbsp; For what it is worth, the leading tackler on the team signed with BYU and is also a two-star.amp;nbsp; There are lt;a href=http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Peni+Fiu%27angaihetauamp;search_type=amp;aq=f target=_blankgt;no videos lt;/agt;of Peni available at press time.lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;All in all, our highest rated recruit happens to be at our thinnest position, which is good.amp;nbsp; Also, my goodness, look at that hair! Peni, we who are about to blog about you, salute you!lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;bgt;lt;a href=http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/players/37177/Joseph_Townsend class=sbn-auto-linkgt;Joseph Townsendlt;/agt;lt;/bgt; lt;bgt;#94lt;/bgt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;At the other end of the Scout.com rankings of our commits is lt;a href=http://louisville.scout.com/a.z?s=17amp;p=8amp;c=1amp;nid=3891811 target=_blankgt;Joseph Joe Townsendlt;/agt;, a 6’3”, 285 pounder who was originally signed out of high school at Washington State for the 2006 season, then went the JUCO route and was signed by Butch Davis at UNC (impressive!) before last season and Nebraska (also impressive!) before the 2007 season.amp;nbsp; Grades and no doubt some bad luck prevented him from enrolling at any of those previous locales.amp;nbsp; I have no idea if his nickname is Joe but that would certainly make sense.amp;nbsp; Anyway, he seems to have worked hard and put his academic struggles behind him and also apparently has bulked up and grown an inch, since the lt;a href=http://www.uoflsports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/lou-m-footbl-mtt.html target=_blankgt;official roster at uoflsports.com lt;/agt;lists him at 6’4” and 303 lbs.amp;nbsp;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;I’m glad lt;strikegt;Mike cracked the whiplt;/strikegt;amp;nbsp; we decided to do this little project because I am mildly excited about this guy now.amp;nbsp; Nebraska and UNC under Davis both get quality recruits, and if his size is somewhere between what Scout and Kenny Klein say then he at least starts out big enough, even if he’s not huge.amp;nbsp; He comes from a solid football pedigree, as his older brother lt;a href=http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100amp;ATCLID=831282 target=_blankgt;played DT for Nebraska lt;/agt;on their MNC teams in 1994 and 1995 and made it to the NFL wth the New Orleans Saints.amp;nbsp;amp;nbsp; To the optimist in me, it sounds like he just needed a little bit of time to get his head on straight, and the coaches saw enough in his talent to make the effort to help get him there.lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;a href=http://cdn0.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194462/385461.jpggt;lt;img class=photo src=http://cdn1.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194462/385461_medium.jpg alt=385461_medium /gt;lt;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;via lt;a href=http://media.scout.com/media/image/38/385461.jpggt;media.scout.comlt;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;I can’t seem to find any stats or specific proof of his abilities but according to his lt;a href=http://jcfootball.scout.com/a.z?s=87amp;p=8amp;c=1amp;nid=2405903 target=_blankgt;Scout.com profile lt;/agt;he was first-team all league his senior year of high school and has bulked up since then.amp;nbsp; Again, DT is our thinnest position (not literally even if we are on the small side) and there might be some diamond in the rough potential with Mr. Townsend.amp;nbsp;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;bgt;lt;a href=http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/players/13172/Tim_High class=sbn-auto-linkgt;Tim Highlt;/agt; #97lt;/bgt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;Rounding out the round mounds in the middle is JUCO DT Tim High who checks in at a lt;a href=http://louisville.scout.com/a.z?s=17amp;p=8amp;c=1amp;nid=3850282 target=_blankgt;mountainous 6’2”, 310 lbslt;/agt;.amp;nbsp; His stats certainly look the part, even if he doesn’t in this padless picture:lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;a href=http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194468/224443.jpggt;lt;img class=photo src=http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/194468/224443_medium.jpg alt=224443_medium /gt;lt;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;via lt;a href=http://media.scout.com/media/image/22/224443.jpggt;media.scout.comlt;/agt;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;According to lt;a href=http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/2009/01/u-of-l-gets-dt-high.html target=_blankgt;Demlinglt;/agt;, High took an unusual route, spending two years at UNLV before frustration wth playing time led him to El Camino Community College.amp;nbsp; There, he recorded 24 tackles, including 3 for a loss, lt;a href=http://www.scfafootball.com/statistics/2008/ecc.htm target=_blankgt;good for 11th lt;/agt;on the team but 2nd among DTs (and also a few behind linebacker lt;a href=http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/players/14714/Terrance_Williams class=sbn-auto-linkgt;Terrance Williamslt;/agt;!), and the other DT was just ahead of him, so maybe they faced a lot of spread offenses or something. amp;nbsp;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;Anyway, High should provide a breather for whoever provides a breather for LT, or, if we finally switch to the 3-3-5, be able to learn the system for a year.amp;nbsp; And hope that whoever replaces the current regime has a place for him.amp;nbsp;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;Wow, 6’2”, 310 pounds.amp;nbsp; You can’t teach size!amp;nbsp;lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;So those are the new DTs.amp;nbsp; The defensive line will need all the help it can get.amp;nbsp; Peni had some BCS offers, and Townsend clearly has talent and could have a WWI-type career here if he gets his grades in order.amp;nbsp; And Tim High sure is big.amp;nbsp; Just get pressure on that QB, fellas, and play hard.amp;nbsp; Welcome aboard!lt;/pgt;
lt;pgt;lt;igt;(Author’s Note: I am going to try to avoid writing anything critical about individual UofL players, especially ones who have never played a down, mainly because these guys are college kids who are just living their dream and who deserve nothing but our support unless they heinous commit crimes.amp;nbsp; That said, let’s be honest, the recruiting is not where it needs to be and that falls on one guy and one guy only whose days are numbered, I hope.)amp;nbsp; lt;/igt;lt;/pgt;
