Tom Benson Is No Saint

The aftermath of the Super Bowl victory by the New Orleans Saints was a delightfully amsuing experience for me. Not because of Saints improbable triumph on the field, but the stupefyingly revisionist reporting about team owner Tom Benson.
Despite his constant threats the past two decades to move the NFL team out of New Orleans, including less-than-subtle hints after Hurricane Katrina, Benson was largely lauded by team staffers, media and league officials for his staunch stewardship of the franchise and loyalty to Lousiana and Saints fans.
Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, and I’m happy to report that Benson is back to his old ways, using the goodwill of the Super Bowl victory as cover to blow out 1,200 longtime Saints season seat holders in favor of luxury suites. Oh yeah, and he’s also raising ticket prices. Again. (more…)

Will the Saints suffer a let-down?

This thought occurred to me in the context of the discussion about the home game to open the season. I assume–as do most people–that we’ll be playing a fired-up, pissed-off Minnesota Vikings team out for more than points. The big question, of course, is whether or not the Saints got lucky in the NFC Championship game and beat a better team. (The big answer: no. Hell no.)

But an even bigger question is: will the Saints come out and match the best the Vikings have to offer with the best they have to offer? Or, will they suffer the sort of post-championship letdown next season that Pittsburgh suffered in 2009? It’s not at all a rare phenomenon, and most commentators put it down to a lack of “hunger” to repeat.

Maybe. I don’t know. But what occurred to me was this: instead of dampening their hunger for a championship, what if the Super Bowl convinced the Saints that they really are that good? Championship-good. Destroy-everything-in-their-path good? These are, after all, the Saints; and as such, they’re heirs to a not-so-sterling tradition. Even though they were the sentimental favorites for much of the year, pretty much only this fan base really believed they could pull off a Super Bowl win. Did the team itself believe it? Or were they delightfully surprised when it happened?

Of course, they said all the right things afterwards. Of course, they had confidence in their abilities. But then, all they had was a belief they could win. Now they know they can.

What if that self-confidence ignites a fire under this team? You thought they were explosive before? I can see them going on a historic rampage…starting with the Vikings.

Will the Saints suffer a post-Super Bowl let-down in 2010?

Are you crazy? Two Dat, baby!

I don’t think so…but reality might catch up to them. After all, the Vikings were better.

I like hamburgers.

Wait, no I don’t. God, I’m so confused. When does the draft start?
