NFL Draft Results: Kenny Vaccaro to New Orleans Saints with No. 15 Overall Pick

167511847

With the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints have selected Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro.

Fate was on the side of the Saints, as teams ahead of them continued drafting tackles and guards, leaving quality defensive talent still on the board. Interesting, the Saints passed on both Sharrif Floyd and Jarvis Jones. That should show you how much they value Vaccaro.

#4 / Safety / Texas Longhorns

senior

During his four years with Texas he had 231 tackles, 14 for a loss, 2 sacks, 5 interceptions, 24 passes defended, and 4 forced fumbles. Vaccaro was known not only for his coverage skills but his ability to make jarring tackles as well.

At the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine the 6’1″, 218 lbs. Vaccaro ran a 4.63 40-yard dash, bench pressed 15 reps of 225 pounds, had a 38 inch vertical, a 121 inch broad jump, and was the top performer in the 20-yard shuttle with a time of 4.06 sec.

What do you guys think? Love it or hate it? Is this the end for Roman Harper?

Saints coach Mike Ditka, like many WIP listeners, was intent on getting running back Ricky Williams.

Report: Rams trying to sell No. 22 pick | ProFootballTalk
The Rams currently hold the Redskins’ first-round pick in the 2013 draft, thanks to the RGIII trade. The Rams may not actually be using that pick. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the selection “clearly is for sale.

Raiders talking to several teams about trading down | ProFootballTalk
The first trade of today’s first round may revolve around Oakland, where there’s increasing talk that the Raiders will trade down from the third overall pick. Oakland is getting a lot of calls from teams that want to move up to No. 3, according to Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

NFL Draft 2013: Baltimore Ravens Select Kevin Minter

#46 / Linebacker / LSU Tigers

Strengths

NFL.com

Attacks blocks with extension and hand use. Very good feel in trash, subtle moves to weave through bodies and recognize run, gets to the ball carrier before teammates despite starting from the opposite side of the formation. not afraid to make contact with lead blocker between the tackles, keeps outside arm free to scrape off to running back. Takes very good angles and lines. Stops momentum of blockers, rolls into them with an anchor to not lose ground. Finishes off tackles very well. Fights as a blitzer, good motor, attempts to run through or get around contact. Sniffs out screens. When the play is visibly in from of him, the click and close can happen very quickly. Looks very comfortable when using hands to work through blockers. Has just enough speed to undercut blocks and make tackles for loss. Remained on the field in nickel packages.

CBS Sports

Cerebral defender. Shows very good anticipatory skills to project where the ball is going, demonstrating the burst and agility to beat offensive linemen to the ball. Shows good effort to slip blocks, demonstrating a quick swim move and hand-slap to shake free, as well as a spin move.

Aggressive and shows little regard for his own body, jumping into the pile. Isn’t often a textbook hitter but consistently gets his man to the ground in the open field, showing good upper body strength for the drag down tackle. Uses his hands well to strip away at the ball as he is making the tackle.

Times the snap well as a blitzer and closes quickly. Reads the quarterback’s eyes nicely when in pass coverage and has a feel for what is happening around him. Enough lateral agility and speed to cover backs. Passionate player with a high-revving motor.

Weaknesses

NFL.com

Occasionally overruns misdirection and draw plays, gives up inside shoulder. Lacks desirable range in coverage because of lost ground when forced to open up hips, turn, and run. Fast enough in a straight line, but lateral speed may be a question. Despite good angles, likely won’t win a foot race to the edge. Too flat footed on play action and misdirection, but at least that prohibits wasted steps. Does not show the quickness to get to screen as or soon after the ball arrives despite seeing it early on. Sees pass and reacts to it in coverage, but doesn’t move any sooner.

CBS Sports

Isn’t the physical thumper that some teams prefer in the middle and may lack the sheer athleticism to handle the switch outside vs. NFL speed. Prefers to elude or spin away from blockers rather than physically taking them on and shedding and when he is locked up, Minter struggles to get free.

Wraps his arms around runners’ legs for the sure stop but isn’t a consistently explosive hitter who’ll strike fear into ball-carriers. Has been surrounded by an awful lot of speed in Baton Rouge and does not appear to have elite speed, himself. Can be beaten to the sideline and relies on angles, vision and effort, rather than speed to track down ball-carriers when in pursuit.

O-LINE: Although a quarterback has been chosen with the No. 1 overall pick in 10 of the past 12 NFL Drafts, that trend may change this year. A pair of tackles – LUKE JOECKEL of Texas A&M and ERIC FISHER of Central Michigan – are among the candidates to be the top choice in 2013.

Since 1967, only three offensive linemen (all tackles) have been chosen with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft – Pro Football Hall of Famer RON YARY (1968), ORLANDO PACE (1997) and JAKE LONG (2008).

AWESOME AGGIE: Texas A&M T LUKE JOECKEL is likely to hear his name called early in Round 1 of the 2013 NFL Draft. If the Kansas City Chiefs select Joeckel, he would become the first Texas A&M player in history to be chosen No. 1 overall.

He would also join four Aggie players who have been chosen in the top five of an NFL Draft since 1967, including Pro Bowl LB VON MILLER, who was the No. 2 overall pick in 2011 by Denver.

GOING GLOBAL: At least eight players who hail from beyond the borders of the United States may be selected in the 2013 NFL Draft this week, including several who are likely to be chosen in the first round.

Top defensive end prospect BJOERN WERNER, a Berlin, Germany native, played football for the first time at age 15, but you’d never have known it watching him play at Florida State.

Werner was a unanimous All-America selection in 2012, also earning ACC Defensive Player of the year honors. His 23.5 career sacks rank fourth in school history.

After a brief basketball career at Marist College in New York, tackle MENELIK WATSON, a native of Manchester, England, tried football for the first time at Saddleback Junior College in California and found his calling.

Watson quickly earned a scholarship to Florida State, where he was a teammate of Werner’s in 2012. Despite playing in just his second season of organized football, Watson started 12 of 13 games last year and was recognized as an All-ACC honorable mention performer by the league’s coaches and media.

Estonia native MARGUS HUNT was a gold medalist in the shot put and discus at the 2006 World Junior Championships before moving to Texas to train with renowned Southern Methodist track coach Dave Wollman. But by the time Hunt arrived, SMU decided to drop its men’s track program. To help defray the costs of attending college, Hunt applied his athletic talents as a defensive end and quickly earned a football scholarship.

A regular contributor for the Mustangs each of the past three seasons, Hunt led the team with eight sacks as a senior. He also displayed an uncanny ability to contribute on special teams, setting the NCAA all-time record for blocked field goals/PATs (17 total).

Defensive end ZIGGY ANSAH, a Ghana native, was a walk-on at Brigham Young and played football for the first time when he suited up for the Cougars in 2010. After two seasons as a reserve, Ansah earned a starting job early in the 2012 season, finishing with 4.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

Defensive tackle JESSE WILLIAMS, who was a member of two National Championship teams at Alabama, hails from Brisbane, Australia and grew up playing rugby. He came to love football as a teenager and traveled all the way to Arizona Western Community College, playing two seasons there before transferring to powerhouse Alabama and immediately earning a starting role.

Track and field star LAWRENCE OKOYE, who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and never played organized football at any level, has become a fast-rising NFL prospect at defensive end following a head-turning performance at the Super Regional Combine at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas earlier this month.

Okoye, who holds the all-time discus record for Great Britain, impressed with a 4.84 40-yard dash time in Dallas and standout performances in other drills despite his 6-6, 300-pound frame. He’s also an exemplary student and has deferred his admission to Oxford University, where he plans to study law in the future.

Jamaican-born TREVARDO WILLIAMS moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut at age 10 and went on to star at linebacker for nearby UConn. Williams is an impact pass rusher who totaled 30.5 career sacks for the Huskies, the most in school history.

Oklahoma’s TOM WORT, who hails from Crawley, England, moved to America at age 14 and eventually settled in Texas. He went on to become a three-year starter at linebacker for the Sooners, totaling 190 career tackles and earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors in 2011.

MR. IRRELEVANT: The Indianapolis Colts will have the honor of selecting this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant” – a tongue-in-cheek title bestowed annually upon the last player chosen in the NFL Draft – with the 254th pick.

Over the past 37 years, Irrelevant Week, Inc. has donated more than $1 million to charitable organizations in the Southern California community. In 2013, the organization has named Special Olympics Southern California as their charitable recipient. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities.

NFL Draft 2013: San Francisco 49ers Select Jonathan Cyprien

162768703

Jonathan Cyprien, S, Florida International

Jonathan Cyprien

#7 / Strong Safety / Fla. International Golden Panthers

6-1

210

senior

This was a tough pick for a few reasons. First, the 49ers are fairly solid across the board. They just went to the Super Bowl and made it quite an interesting game against the Ravens. The 49ers sport a young, mobile QB, have good depth at RB, a very good TE, OK receivers and a good O-line. On defense, they have been near the top of the rankings the past few seasons and we would start most of their players over ours.

They lost Dashon Gholdson to our rivals in Tampa Bay, so they will be looking for a safety at some point in the draft. And Justin Smith is getting older (33) and is coming off a triceps injury from last season…they missed his normal production during their Super Bowl run as he didn’t have any sacks. I was actually going to pick Tank Carradine, but our friend Dave Choate took him off the board with the Falcons pick. As much as I wanted to pick a defensive end, I couldn’t find one that really made sense at 31 (Margus Hunt might be a bit raw for their liking). So I went for safety and picked Cyprien here (guess this might land me on Stu’s List!)

John Cyprien is a hard hitter with good range and the speed to close in on the ball. He has good size (6′-0″, 217 lbs) and isn’t afraid to mix it up against the run. He is quite versatile as a safety and can do it all…he can cover TEs and slot receivers when needed. He has been a starter four years and isn’t a project. He even plays with the swagger that we hear so much about our defense lacking this past season. He’d fit in well with a 49er squad that definitely carries a lot of swagger and is able to back it up.

As for weaknesses, he does tend to be a bit aggressive and might get beaten a few times until he learns from his mistakes. That said, when playing for a team with the depth the 49ers have, he probably won’t take too many lumps. Personally, if we could convince the 49ers to trade up and take Vacarro, I’d be happy to land Cyprien here and pick up a couple of extra picks. I think Cyprien is going to be a Pro-Bowler and impact player for many years to come.

Other possibilities: Margus Hunt (DE), Alec Ogletree (ILB), Zach Ertz (TE), Sylvester Williams (NT)

NFL Draft 2013: Saints Final Mock Draft Database Favors Jarvis Jones

20130223_ajw_bl4_433

When it comes to what the “experts” think, there’s one player more likely to be selected by the Saints in the first round of tonight’s NFL Draft than any other.

I’ve put together all the last minute mock drafts from around the internet and compiled them one final time and the consensus pick is most definitely Jarvis Jones. By a landslide.

Out of 34 total mock drafts, a whopping 21 of them have the Saints drafting Jarvis Jones at 15th overall. Barkevious Mingo is your runner up with 7 mocks assigning him to the Saints.

In case you were wondering, here’s a look at how the mock draft database results have change over time this off-season. The players listed below were the leading candidates to be the Saints first round draft pick at the time. Interesting to see how things changes and eventually focused directly on Jones.

Initial Mock Draft Database (Feb. 11th): Dion Jordan, Ezekiel Ansah

Post Combine Mock Draft Database (March 4th): Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones, Ezekiel Ansah, Dion Jordan

Saints Mock Draft Database 3.0 (March 22nd): Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones

Anyway, here’s your final mock draft database. This one is pretty comprehensive and includes all the big shots as well as some of the smaller outlets.
