Da Chronic’s Offseason Survival Series Podcast: Drew Brees Loves America Edition!

Podcast_medium

This week Joe Vitt goes on the Maury Povich Show to take a lie detector test, while Dave tries to figure out if Anthony Hargrove making a stink will matter at all. The boys aren’t sure if the Saints are guilty of intent to injure but they are 100% certain children are better at Photoshop and Powerpoint than Gregg Williams.

Kevin also wonders how anyone could read a Drew Brees tweet and think he isn’t pro military (or do people forget Drew went to Guantanamo Bay, and it wasn’t for vacation). Dave ties a ribbon round the old oak tree. Ralph was really disappointed when twitter broke Thursday and it wasn’t because Brees had signed. Kevin and Ralph also wonder if the stupidity of some people on Twitter towards athletes might eventually go from stupid tweets to terrible action.

Of Saints and Kings: The Unwavering Faith of Two Fan Bases

Anyone here looking for a Cup?

The New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Kings have had more in common over the years than any of us may have realized. Both franchises were established in 1967 and have endured 40+ years of futility, frustration, and heartbreak. All of the disappointment has come to an end for our respective fan bases thanks to the Saints magical Super Bowl run in 2009 and the Kings equally impressive Stanley Cup journey in 2012.

The Saints and Kings have had two of the longest waits for their first title in the history of American professional sports. As a Saints fan, I can tell you it was worth the wait and I wouldn’t change a thing. Kings fans have expressed the same sentiment to me as well.

In an offseason of turmoil, mistrust, and misinformation, I found hope and fond memories in the most unlikely of places: LA Kings fans and the City of Angels itself.

I was born in New Orleans, thus born a Saints fan naturally, but was raised here in Southern California. I’ve been in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years and have been a hockey fan for the same amount of time. Although I’ve been a die hard Red Wings fan all these years I have always had respect for the Kings and their fans. Many of my friends over the years being Kings fans themselves.

We have suffered in many of the same ways over the years and now we both know the feeling of standing on the mountaintop, having finally won the elusive hardware we all desired with such agonizing passion. From tears of pain and heartbreak to tears of thanks and joy, we’ve earned the respect we all waited our lives as fans for.

My friends as Kings fans learned a lot about their recent journey from me and I learned a lot about myself as a Saints fan from them. As the Kings unlikely run to the Cup began to grow from inconceivable to inevitable, I started fielding various questions from friends about what to expect during a title run and what my experiences were as a Saints fan during the 2009 season and 2010 postseason. Go figure, a Saints fan telling anyone what being a champion feels like, and what to expect. My how times have changed!

I’ve been told how they have cheered for guys like Luc Robitaille and Ian Laperriere in past Stanley Cup Finals just to have a rooting interest. Past Kings who had to leave for greener pastures to chase that elusive Cup. How many times had we as Saints fans done that in the past? Too many to count. Rooting for former Saints or New Orleans natives in the Super Bowl seemed to be the closest thing we would get to the title. Rickey Jackson made it, we made it! Manning did it, we did it! Well, it was something during those long Saints-less postseasons.

In different conversations I’ve had since the Kings run began and now that the elusive Stanley Cup has been won, I have given some advice to my friends. It is in this advice that I realized that I need to practice what I preach and we as Saints fans need to take a step back to reflect on how far we’ve come. Some things I experienced and told them about were:

There will be a moment it really hits you

When LA won the conference title there was a lot of joy among fans, but almost some disbelief as well. There will be a single moment it all feels real to you though. That moment will be different for all fans but you’ll know it when it happens. When the Saints won the NFC title, I felt the joy and euphoria but it also felt surreal. Was this really finally happening for us? For days it was like a dream I hoped not to wake from. My moment of realization was a small one but it was very symbolic for me as a lifelong Saints fan.

The first time I saw images of the Saints end zone at Sun Life Stadium was a stunning moment for me. Seeing the gold end zone with the black font and the fleur de lis made we well up with pride. It was a small thing that resonated with me. Always seeing other teams names in those end zones all these years, but now it was our team and our turn.

Winning a title is expensive

Championship Hats, T-Shirts, commemorative magazines, books, official towels, patches, pennants, Blu-Rays and/or DVDs. This is just the beginning of the purchases that are made after wining the title, especially after a lifetime of waiting for it. I remember seeing the XLIV logo the first time in ’09 and thinking how ugly it was. Now, it’s truly a thing of beauty to behold, and it is the last unique Super Bowl logo before the NFL’s rebranding. I wear that logo all over the place now, go figure. Winning a title is a blast but it’s killer on the bank account.

Prepare for a surprisingly short offseason

Being in the midst of this ridiculously long offseason has really made me reflect on the post-XLIV offseason. It stands to reason that your offseason will be shorter than usual after a championship season because you are playing for a month, sometimes longer, than the other teams. Mentally though, it seems like you can’t wait for the next season to start following the disappointment of falling short of a title. Conversely, when you win it all you don’t want the party to stop.

People want to start discussing who “the next Saints” will be and will start prematurely crowning new and “hungrier” teams that will take your place. You never get enough time to soak it in. Even on the Super Bowl podium or at center ice with the Cup, reporters will ask coaches and players if they will repeat, or if they will retire, or if they will sign a new contract. How about a moment to celebrate, everybody!

Don’t be a victim of the teams success

Many of us as Saints fans have fallen victim to this. We are so caught up in the need to win Super Bowls as the only measure of success that we can’t even celebrate a 13-3 season. Instead of celebrating 13-3 many of us say, If we only had won at St. Louis we’d be Super Bowl Champions right now. I’m one of the worst offenders of this. Instead of looking back at the Giants, Falcons, and Lions games last season, I look back at St. Louis and what could’ve been.

That’s just terrible, What I and many other Saints fans would’ve given for a 13-3 season just 4 or 5 years ago. Don’t let your perspectives get too far out of control. There obviously is a championship window where you expect the most from your teams, but many times it’s the unlikely teams that win it all, like the Kings.

Lastly, and most importantly:

Enjoy the ride

Like the old saying goes: Getting there is half the fun. When we get so close to the title, we just want to win at all costs and get it done in as few games as possible. We don’t realize until it’s over that the journey was just as exciting as the silver trophy at the end of it. The journey to the mountaintop is what make the story enjoyable. The Lord of the Rings would’ve been a terrible story if Frodo just melted down the ring at his house, right?

We look back at the ’09 season with reverence and astonishment but we may have missed many of the nuances live as they happened because we were so overcome with the need to win and advance. We have DVDs and DVR recordings to reminisce about that incredible season but you can never go back again and re-live it as it unfolded. There will be other championship seasons and maybe even better championship seasons, but you’ll never get that first one back.

Soak in every moment, every victory, and yes, even every failure. They all make up the chapters of a storybook tale of that first championship season. I’ll never forget ours, and sometimes I wish I could go back and watch that New England game live, and Super Bowl XLIV live. They are moments in time that strengthen our bonds with our teams and moments we will never forget. Enjoy the ride, this is the time you always hoped for and will always fondly remember.

In a time of legal battles, suspensions, and punishments for the Saints, I was reminded of better times thanks to the Kings Stanley Cup run of 2012. Lakertown, for a moment in time became the City of Kings. A sports town that stopped being jaded for once and embraced the underdog. When I watched the Kings, I wasn’t reminded of Sean Pamphilon and Roger Goodell, I was reminded of Tracy Porter’s interceptions and Baylen Brees grasping at confetti. Better times not far removed.

Thank you Kings and Kings fans. Congratulations, and don’t forget about New Orleans come football season.

Spagnuolo Not Content as Assistant Coach?

Photo

Last year, under the Gregg Williams “blitz ’til they bleed” defensive scheme, the Who Dat Nation watched in horror as their defensive coordinator refused to run a prevent defense in the fourth quarter against the 49ers in the playoffs. Instead he chose to showcase the different blitz schemes he could come up with knowing that he wouldn’t be with the Saints the following season. With all the “bounty” scandal bullstuff circling overhead, the team’s defense is now trying to move on under the tutelage of Steve Spanuolo.

Steve Spagnuolo did not have a very good run as a head coach in St. Louis, but he’s always been respected as a defensive coordinator. I was extremely happy when I heard that he had joined the Saints coaching staff, and couldn’t wait to see how much better his defensive scheme would be in comparison to someone who was coaching with one foot out the door. In light of a recent interview, I don’t know if he’ll be any different than Gregg “Kill the Head” Williams, and I’m not so certain that he has bought into the Who Dat Nation way of life.

Now I’m not saying this makes him a bad person because he’s kind of new to the place. And I realize that he’s an NFL level coach and opportunities are few and far between. I’m just saying that some of the answers in the interview are not making me feel very comfortable. According to this he’s already looking for another opportunity to come knocking.

“Yeah, there’s a burn there, I’m not going to lie to you,’’ said Spagnuolo, whose mother lives in Yarmouth. “I think the professional thing to do in this situation is you concentrate all your efforts and all your focus on the job that you have right now.

“I feel lucky I have this job. In this business, you fight every day to keep the job that you have. Now, should the good Lord put another opportunity in front of me to be a head coach, I’m jumping at it, I’m going to run with it. I know that I’ll be better having gone through it.

“I think I’m a better football coach. I know if given the opportunity again, which I hope happens, I will be a 10-times-better head coach because sometimes you learn more from your failures than you do from your success.”

So is he using the Saints as his proverbial stepping stone? Wouldn’t it be wonderful for him if the Saints’ defense performs so well they help move the team into the Superbowl in the Superdome and win it all? It would be the perfect way for us to rise like a black and gold phoenix from the ashes of “Bountygate.”

It would seem that both the Saints’ and Spagnuolo’s redemption go hand in hand. He regains the spotlight for a head coaching opportunity, and the team gets to regain their reputation for being an elite team with or without bounties.

So how long can we expect Spagnuolo to stick around? How long is his contract (no, really I can’t find it anywhere)? If he helps rally our defense how much attention will he get for head coaching jobs and will he leave us if the right position comes along? Do you care?

All these questions swirling around and I’ve got no answers. I’d love my fellow Who Dats to come to my aid, help convince me that this is not another 49ers scenario where our defensive coordinator is about to go rogue and use all of our primetime exposure to advance his career. Tell me Spags will eventually apply for his Who Dat Nation citizenship card. Ease the burden of a tumultuous offseason, a lack of a head coach and a MIA QB. Spags, I know you say you’ll focus on the job at hand, but are you able to multitask between coaching a defense and updating your careerbuilder.com resume? Or do you even watch Oprah?!?

How long will Spags coach for the Saints?

Siding with Anthony Hargrove: No Proof He Says "Give Me My Money"

Photo

Tuesday afternoon former Saints defensive end Anthony Hargrove, who is currently a member of the Green Bay Packers, stood outside NFL headquarters and delivered a powerful speech declaring his innocence from the so-called “bounty program.” He isn’t denying that there was such program, but only saying he was not involved in one. If you haven’t seen this speech, I would highly recommend you go watch it. I have it linked for you here. If you would rather read it than watch the video, a transcript is available down below the video.

Most of his time is spent claiming that Roger Goodell, along with the NFL office, is lying and twisting the story around to prove Hargrove is the bad guy. Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma is making a case quite similar to this. Hargrove provides a quote from the NFL, claiming they said, “the circumstances strongly suggest that you told at least one player on another club about the program, and confirmed that Brett Favre was a target of a bounty.”

Hargrove then goes on to say, “I did no such thing. Do I think someone told them I did? Probably. And I believe it was probably the same mystery witness. But it…did…not…happen! There is no way they have absolute proof, because it does not exist. I would stake my career on it.”

He repeats many times throughout the presser that he was no way involved in such a scheme.

Obviously any person being charged with a wrongdoing will make a strong case why they’re innocent, but Hargrove might actually be telling the truth. It may seem too easy to ask this question, but would Anthony really be that stupid to tell someone on another team about the “bounty program?” I don’t think so. And why hasn’t the NFL come out with the evidence that he told said player? Sounds bogus to me.

To finish off his speech, Hargrove explains the incident where he supposedly told Bobby McCray to “give him his money.” Media members have been directly relating this to the “bounties.” He explains that the NFL has their evidence all wrong and that the person saying “give me my money” is not him. I think he is telling the truth.

Below the video of Hargrove’s speech is an interview with NFL reporter Steve Wyche. About four and a half minutes into that video, the infamous clip of the “give me my money” phrase is provided. Subtitles were included at the bottom indicating who said what. Don’t pay attention to them because they will play with your mind.

In the clip, Joe Vitt is discussing with the team the implications if a backup quarterback for the Vikings comes in. Will Smith, Remi Ayodele, and Anthony Hargrove are visible (I’m assuming that Bobby McCray is just outside of the camera view). You can clearly see that Anthony is saying “Bobby.” Immediately after, you can hear “give me my money.” One would think that Hargrove is the player finishing that sentence. But watch the video many times over and look and listen carefully.

Remi Ayodele inadvertently shifts his head, blocking Hargrove’s. Then, in sequence of “give me my money,” you can see Will Smith turn his head and his eyes look directly at Remi Ayodele. Ayodele then commences to turn his head as if he were talking back to Smith. Could Ayodele be the player that says “give me my money?”

If you also listen extremely carefully, you can determine that Hargrove’s voice saying “Bobby” and the voice saying “give me my money” are different.

All of this so called “evidence” that the NFL has been so firmly attached to seems flawed to me.

Now, my conspiracy could be just as flawed as the NFL’s. But who is to say that either is right or wrong? I’m not laying all this out in order to label myself as a genius. This is just what I believe actually happened and that Goodell and the rest of his army is wrong.

I know our fellow friend Angry Who Dat wrote a wonderful article explaining that maybe we should hang up this mess and deal with it. At first I was willing to accept that notion. But after examining this “evidence” a little more, I’m gonna keep fighting the good fight.

I think that when they initially came out with “bountygate,” they thought the players would lay down and take their punishments without fighting back. They didn’t think the players would find flaws in the “evidence.” Well, they thought wrong and sooner than later the hole the NFL dug will be too deep to get out.

As for me, I can’t contribute to the good fight directly, but I’m going to stand by my views. And my views are that Roger Goodell is a sham.

Video doesn’t prove that Hargrove said "give me my money" | ProFootballTalk

This serious flaw in the presentation of the evidence necessarily undermines the league’s entire investigation, further reinforcing the importance of asking tough questions about the proof, the process, and all other aspects of the case. Regardless of whether the players are guilty or innocent, the NFL has peddled to the public, via the media, a stream of inconsistencies, mischaracterizations, and embellishments that raise legitimate concerns about the competence and/or the motives of everyone whose fingerprints are on the file.

While the handling of Vitt’s discipline has no direct bearing on the handling of player discipline, the disconnect suggests that the notes detailing the contributions made to the Brett Favre bounty — which perhaps constitute the only piece of clear written evidence pointing to the use of a bounty system — are for some reason not as reliable and credible as the NFL would have us all believe. And the curious failure of the league to take aggressive action against Vitt for conduct that, if it occurred, should have triggered a suspension of at least one year or more illustrates why, regardless of guilt or innocence, real questions need to be asked regarding the key details of this case.

Roger Goodell Should Also Take Lie Detector Test

Photo

Just saw the recent news that Joe Vitt is willing to take a lie detector test in order to prove that he never contributed to the Brett Favre bounty pool.

“In the recent information released by the NFL to the NFLPA, and later to the media, there is an allegation made against me that is completely untrue and I cannot let it go unchallenged.”

“I did not pledge any money for any type of incentive program pertaining to the 2010 NFC Championship game. Furthermore, I have never at any time pledged any money for any type of incentive program, or so-called ‘bounty’ program.”

“Today I had a great conversation with the Commissioner and stated I would sign a sworn affidavit to this fact, or make myself available to take a lie detector, to immediately rectify this matter,” Vitt said. “Also it cannot be emphasized enough, none of our players, particularly those who are facing suspensions, ever crossed the white line with the intent to injure an opponent. I am proud of our players and stand behind them 100% and will do whatever I can to help restore their good names.”

I think that’s a swell idea. And, hey, since we’re passing around the polygraph, why don’t we put those little fingertip thingies on the Commissioner and have Roger Goodell take a test, too! He’s got nothing to hide, right? He’s the good guy in this entire scandal, trying to do what’s best for the players and their safety, right?

I say lie detector tests for everyone! Let’s get some real answers and put this godamned issue to f***ing bed already. For the love of all things holy.

Just for funsies, what questions would you ask Goodell if he was hooked up to a polygraph?
