Panthers @ Saints: Start 'Em or Rest 'Em?

What do these guys have in mind for the Panthers' game on Sunday? Hopefully something that will have us all smiles, too. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

OK CSCers, it is now 24 hours and some change until the Saints will take the field against the Carolina Panthers for the final regular season game of 2011 (technically, it's the first game of 2012, but who around here ever gets caught up in semantics?).

As I awoke today, I found myself still wondering what the Saints should do about playing their starters in this game, and how long they should stay in, as well.

Make the jump to review what we know and then speculate on this matter with me...

Panthers vs Saints coverage

Panthers vs Saints preview

Cat Scratch Reader

It's been a whirlwind few days since the Saints beat Atlanta on Monday night and Drew Breeeeeees!!! set the new single-season passing yardage mark, so let's just carefully walk ourselves through the sequence.

By Wednesday morning, Dave was already dealing with the question of Drew Brees's status for the game, and went on the record in support of him playing on Sunday to help stay ahead of Tom Brady, who is only 190 yards behind Brees in passing yards for 2011.

Then, based on Sean Payton's press conference later that day, Mike Triplett reported that the Saints would be playing to win on Sunday:

"We're going full speed ahead," said Payton, who said he doesn't even plan to pay attention to the score of the San Francisco 49ers-St. Louis Rams game, which will be played at the same time...

...Payton said he decided to play his starters this week, both because of that shot at the No. 2 seed and because he feels like his team is well-rested and has a lot of momentum going during its current seven-game win streak.

"We're playing some of our best football here the last few weeks," Payton said. "There's some value to that."

Nothing much changed on Thursday, as folks reported on Wednesday's statements, and while Drew Brees's Wednesday press conference didn't offer any information contradictory to Payton's, he did discuss how the situation in 2011 is different from that in 2010:

There's a lot of records out there we could potentially set, break. I think our mindset above and beyond that is how do we put ourselves in the best position to play and win in the playoffs and when you look at last year, you could say this situation is somewhat similar to last year where going into week 16 if we beat Tampa and Atlanta loses, we win the division and get the one seed. This time around, we're locked into the three unless we win, San Fran loses then we get the two, so that's a significant jump. That's the difference between a first round bye or not...

...Last year we felt we were a little banged up, should rest up, limited some guys. I think we all found ourselves scoreboard watching a little in regards to that other game, therefore I feel like not that we took a step back in that game. We just didn't progress and I feel like our mindset is that we want to continue to progress and continue to get better, because I think there are things that serve you well in this game if you can continue to stay in the rise as you head into the playoffs, whether they're confidence builders or situations that come up that you fight through.

Payton addressed the question from some different angles in Friday's press conference, first:

Does a potential upcoming playoff game next week affect your decision on whether you play a player in this week's game?
"I think it would have to be very simple: does he help the team in playing well enough to win a game? If the answer is no, if it's something that is potentially not full speed and it could hurt the team, then you can't play them. If the answer is yes, that would be a lot like week eight or week nine. It happened last week where Lance (Moore) as recovering and it seemed like he was doing well and then on the third catch all of a sudden he pulled up and now you're at 45 (players) on game day. You're always trying to gauge where that player is and is he healthy enough to help us. If the answer is yes, then that's one thing. If it's no, sometimes that's a difficult decision."

Then...

Was there any thought to not put the scores of the 49ers-Rams game this weekend on the scoreboard in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome?

"Honestly there are so many thoughts that come ahead of that, but I understand the question. I think we're treating it like we would (any game). This is a chance for us to win a 13th game, which has really been done once in this organization's history. We just got done talking at the end of practice, we feel like we've been playing good football and yet there are areas that we feel like we can improve on. We feel like that could help us heading into the postseason. We want to finish strong and we want to play well. I think that is separate entirely from what happens with any of the other games. It's always this last week where there are a handful of scenarios. I think maybe it's a little clearer in the NFC because it really just comes down to one game with either the Giants or Cowboys winning, but other than that the field is set. I think we're going to really pay closer attention to how we're doing rather than how anyone else is doing."

...and one more try to see if he'll say anything different:

Does the possibility of Drew Brees' single-season passing yardage record come into consideration at all with playing him?

"Not really. There are a lot of statistical little things that could be achieved or not achieved in this game, but not really. I think the focus is playing our best game against a team that we feel like is playing very well and is very hot and very difficult to defend. They're a team that's gotten better and better certainly since we played them last, which seems like such a long time ago. I think our focus is really on what we need to do to play our best football game and play these guys and finish the season on the right note."

OK, now you've got the official word(s) from Sean Payton and Drew Brees on the matter, as well as a tiny bit of analysis/assessment/projecting from Dave and Mike Triplett.

Sean Payton only tells the media what he wants them to know, so there's good reason to suspect he may be puffing out a smoke screen for strategic advantage.

And now the question is, "What in the wide, wide, world of sports are they really and actually going to do on Sunday against the Panthers?"

Please vote in the poll and then discuss your rationale in the comment section below. You can also explore the whole "shades of meaning" area by sharing what you THINK they will do and what they really SHOULD do (if there's a difference)...

Let's do this!

Panthers @ Saints: Da Chronic's Podcast Preview

This week Ralph, Dave and Kevin discuss why the Saints didn't embarrass Atlanta to get Drew Brees the passing record but it was Atlanta embarrassing themselves. They also figure out how long the starters should play against the Panthers, how many yards Brees needs to hold onto the record he just broke and how big a game Jimmy Graham will have. Kevin explains just how adorable Darren Sproles is and Ralph wonders if Pierre Thomas should have taken his touchdown bow celebration to the next level.

Panthers @ Saints: Game Predictions

It's time for our final regular season edition of our weekly prediction contest. But don't be sad, because there will be at least one more contest this season when the playoffs begin. Hopefully another two or three after that.

By now you should all know what to do and how to do it, but just in case you don't, you can catch up on the rules of the game right here. As always, all are welcome to partake, including opposing fans. This is a great opportunity for those readers who have never signed up or commented to finally dip their toe in the water.

Before we get started, we must continue the tradition of acknowledging last weeks winner and today that would be CSC member, Philinwood, who won by a landslide vote. Here are the three predictions that earned him the win, courtesy of your votes:

1) Saints gain 100+ yards rushing
2) Saints have at least one kick runback (punt or kickoff return) for over 50 yards.
3) Saints recover at least one Falcons fumble

Now let's get this party started!

Falcons 16 @ Saints 45: Top 5 Defensive Plays

Defensive Play #1 - Strip, Scoop and Score

4th Quarter

1-10-ATL 27 - (11:20) (Shotgun) M.Ryan pass short right to J.Jones to ATL 35 for 8 yards (S.Shanle). FUMBLES (S.Shanle),touched at ATL 35, RECOVERED by NO-M.Jenkins at ATL 30. M.Jenkins for 30 yards, TOUCHDOWN.Pass 5, YAC 3

Stripscore_medium

After making a catch during a late-game comeback attempt, Julio Jones was stripped by Scott Shanle while trying to pick up more yardage after the catch. Malcolm Jenkins was all over the ball, picking it up in one smooth motion and running it 30 yards for the touchdown. Game over.

Defensive Play #2 - Down On All Fours

4th Quarter

4-1-NO 9 (8:20) M.Ryan pass incomplete short middle to R.White [R.Harper]

4-1-ATL 33 (5:12) (Shotgun) M.Ryan pass incomplete short left to J.Jones (T.Porter)

On two separate 4th and 1 plays in the 4th quarter, Mike Smith kept Matt Ryan and the offense on the field in last ditch attempts to win the game. Just like in their first meeting, the Falcons had nowhere to go on either play.

Defensive Play #3 - Malcolm's Back Breaker

2nd Quarter

3-1-ATL 2 - (11:13) M.Ryan pass incomplete short left to R.Kelly (M.Jenkins). ATL-R.Kelly was injured during the play. His return is Probable

Jenkinshitskelly_medium

Not only was it a ferocious hit that got everyone on the defense pumped, but it stopped the Falcons on a key 3rd down play when the game was still close.

Defensive Play #4 - Greer Goes Gonzo

1st Quarter

1-10-NO 23 (10:24) J.Rodgers right end to NO 24 for -1 yards (J.Greer)

2-11-NO 24 (9:42) M.Ryan pass incomplete short right to J.Jones (J.Greer)

On the opening series of the game, Jabari Greer was a shut down machine in both pass defense and run support. First he took out Jacquizz Rodgers on an outside run. Then he made a well-timed pass breakup in front of Julio Jones. The Falcons would eventually settle for a field goal; his play and that series set a good tone for the night.

Defensive Play #5 - Mr. Bowjangles

1st Quarter

3-2-ATL 4 - (5:29) P.Thomas right guard for 4 yards, TOUCHDOWN. R5PENALTY on NO-P.Thomas, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, 15 yards, enforced between downs. After the play, Thomaspulled a bow out of his uniform and attached it to the football as a Christmas present

I'm really stretching the definition of defensive play with this one but I thought that damn bow did such a good job of "stopping" Pierre Thomas from "scoring" a nomination for best touchdown celebration of the year, I figured I'd roll with it. First, the paper protector on the sticky tab just wouldn't come off (the gloves probably don't help), as Pierre "fumbled" nervously and his teammates watched on patiently. Then the pesky bow wouldn't stick to the freakin' ball so Pierre was "forced to settle" with holding it down while handing it to a fan. Advantage: bow.

Falcons 16 @ Saints 45: A Review of HansDat's Hot Reads

Man, oh man, I am still both buzzing with excitement and emotionally worn out from that action-packed and record-filled Monday evening in the Dome that was the New Orleans Saints 45-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Saints now have 12 wins on the season, and are still alive (albeit barely breathing, as they need a highly unlikely Rams win over the 49ers) for the # 2 seed.

But before we can really get into all that talk and future speculation, let's dig into the nuts and bolts of the Falcons game one more time to see how HansDat's Hot Reads turned out.

Falcons vs Saints coverage

Falcons vs Saints recap

Falcons vs Saints box score

Primary Option: Protect Drew Brees

What I'd Like To See: More of the same from Week 10. Give Brees the protection he needs to keep the offense humming along to victory. Let's keep him sack-free, on his feet, and off the ground (especially out of the clutches of John Abraham, their leading sacker). Heck, maybe he can even sway a few final undecided MVP voters along the way.

From where I was sitting, it seemed that the line and chippers offered Brees excellent protection for most of the night. The Falcons defense notched only one sack, and two QB hits. Brees did a great job of avoiding pressure when it did come, but a few times he held the ball a bit too long, waiting for something to develop.

Since I called for a sack-free game, the best I can do is call this Hot Read partly achieved.

Checkdown # 1: Run More And Run Better

What I'd Like To See: Mo' better running than they achieved in Week 10. The Falcons give up just a shade under 97 yards per game, so it won't be easy, but I think they'll need at least 30 attempts and 125+ yards. I'd like to see it early and often to keep the Falcons off-balance, but I also wouldn't mind if most of the carries came at the end as they control the clock to win the game.

I'd have to say that quadrupling their previous 41-yard output counts as mo' better running. The Saints recorded 23 carries for 164 yards (with 84 of those yards coming in the first half). And with averaging 7.1 yards per carry (that's pretty darn efficient) and the team gunning for the passing record for Brees, it's no wonder they didn't reach 30 carries. Well done, Saints!

But given that I specifically called for 30 carries, I must again score this as a Hot Read that was only partially achieved.

Checkdown # 2: Third Down Turnaround

What I'd Like To See: At least 60% success on third downs tonight. Put up or go home. It's that simple.

Well, on this Read, the Saints definitely put up (10 of 13 for 77%) and sent the Falcons packing - HARD.

Hot Read: ACHIEVED

Safety Valve: Fundamental Tackling

What I'd Like To See: Saint defenders getting to Falcon ball carriers quickly and bringing them down cleanly with good technique. See what you hit, wrap up, and be sure to lift/drive through the ball carrier. Watch their hips - they can't go anywhere without them. If you are the first to arrive, don't go for the hit or strip, let the next guy do that once you have secured the ball carrier and are dragging him down. It will save yardage and my voice.

Well, it wasn't not fun, but it wasn't big fun, either. At times they were right there with clean tackles, other times they missed a bit, and on other tries, I noticed strip attempts by the first man to the ball (Roman Harper) without really trying to make a tackle. They gave up 434 passing yards, but only 35 on the ground, and yielded only 16 points the whole game, so even though they weren't perfect, it wasn't too costly, so what are you gonna do?

I'll tell you what I'll do: call this Hot Read partly achieved, I will.

Bonus Hot Read: Be Special On Special Teams

What I'd Like To See: The Saints to be the ones who make that special play break their way. Whether it's a big stop that keeps the Falcons from getting points, a takeaway on a return that snags an extra possession and maybe a short field for the Saints, a big return (maybe for a score), a successful "roxy-roxy" play, or whatever. They just need to end up on the right side of whatever this big play ends up being.

I thought this would be a close game in which a big special teams play was going to make a difference, but the game wasn't even that close at all. There WAS a big special teams play (a 92-yard kickoff return to the Falcons 14-yard line), and someone on the Saints DID make it (Darren Sproles), but it was in the third quarter, when the score was 28-13, and it hardly qualifies as a game changer (the drive itself went nowhere and led to John Kasay's only FG of the game).

So, I can only give this Hot Read partial credit.

* * *

This week, the Saints achieved on 3 out of 5 Hot Reads and still managed to squeak out a 29-point win and take care of the season passing record against the Falcons, so bully for them.

Now let me know what you think of my assessment of the game, my Reads, and their impact.
