Lofa Tatupu: Cinderella Story or Disaster Waiting to Happen?

Photo

The Saints had their first free agent visit of the 2012 off-season earlier this week when the team met with middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu here in New Orleans. News that many Saints fans seemed to get excited about. Nothing has resulted from the visit as of yet, but since it’s the only interesting thing to happen in Who Dat Nation in quite some time, I figured we might as well discuss it a little further. Is this Lofa Tatupu character a player the Saints want to take a chance on?

Coming out of USC in 2005 and drafted by Seattle, Tatupu’s NFL career looked incredibly promising, starting with three straight Pro Bowl seasons. But he hasn’t been the same since then, putting up just mediocre stats when not recovering from a torn pectoral or sitting out all of last season amid reports of a knee injury.

So which Lofa Tatupu will be returning to football in 2012: the Pro Bowl player from his early career or the mediocre injury risk from recent years? Obviously that’s the million dollar question. If the former, his signing would potentially be the biggest pickup of the Saints 2012 off-season. If the latter, well, we’re all used to that by now.

I suppose whether or not it’s worth the risk of signing Tatupu depends on how much he’s compensated. If the price is right, then it might be stupid not to take a chance. But it’s not worth overpaying for such an unknown factor. As far as length of contract, I’d say a short term deal is in the cards.

What do you guys think? Is Tatupu worth the risk? How much do you pay a guy who sat out all of last season?

5Q: Kevin Mathis | Atlanta Falcons
KM: It’s very difficult to say how different the fans are. I’ve been on both ends of it. For instance, my first year in New Orleans, we played Atlanta in New Orleans and at the end of the game, all you could see was Falcons fans up at the top, still screaming, still yelling because they won. It opened my eyes and I said, “Hey, these guys travel all the way from Atlanta down to New Orleans for this game.” It’s the same on the other side, where we’ve gotten beaten by New Orleans in Atlanta.

Saints could face choice between free agents Marques Colston and Carl Nicks
My educated guess is this: I don’t think both will be playing for the Black and Gold next year and both could leave for greener pastures.

Measuring Mark Ingram

Photo

Throw a Heisman Trophy winning running back in front of the Saints on draft day and they just can’t help themselves. It’s like dangling a T-bone steak in front of a salivating bulldog, and they will trade away their life savings and first born to put themselves in position to make the pick if necessary. Since 1981, the Saints have drafted four Heisman Trophy Running Backs: George Rogers, Ricky Williams, Reggie Bush and most recently, Mark Ingram. You can also include Earl Campbell in the mix, whom the Saints traded for in 1984, reuniting then Coach Bum Phillips with his former All Pro running back from the Houston Oilers. Obviously, there was a fairly wide time gap between Rogers and Williams, but the irresistible attraction never faded away.

The jury is still out on Ingram after just one season, but it is safe to say that Rogers, Williams and Bush never met the high expectations that Saints fans had for them when their names were called within the top five picks. Dealing with “off the field issues” has been a common denominator that plagued our first three Heisman draft choices. Rogers and Williams each battled highly publicized drug use, while Bush had some lingering unfinished business from his college days at USC that had to be a distraction.

So, what does the Saints disappointing track record with Heisman Trophy running backs mean for Mark Ingram’s career? Maybe nothing at all. But he didn’t exactly burst out of the gate in his rookie season. Character issues certainly don’t seem to be a problem with Ingram, but like many great running backs he has shown to be injury prone. After missing two games mid-season with a bruised hell, a sprained toe kept Ingram out of the last four games, and ended the season rushing for 474 yards on 122 carries and scoring five touchdowns.

Even with the setback from injuries, Ingram’s non-spectacular statistics must be put in perspective when comparing to the Saints other Heisman winners. When Rogers, Williams and Bush were drafted they were each expected to be the savior from the very first moment they put the Black and Gold jerseys over their custom made suits on the NFL Draft stage. When Ingram was drafted the Saints already had their savior in Drew Breesus, they just needed to add a downfield running dimension to the roster of disciples, which Bush obviously lacked. However, it was free agent Darren Sproles that proved to be the Saints’ best weapon in providing both a vertical running game along with being dangerous in open space as Bush was.

With the addition of Sproles to the arsenal of other playmakers that Brees has at his disposal to distribute the ball, evaluating the success of Ingram can be tricky. Playing tailback in the Saints pass-oriented system, Ingram would be getting less carries as the featured back anyway. But sharing time in the backfield with the very capable Sproles, Pierre Thomas and even Chris Ivory, his potenital number of carries per game are even less likely to reach any significant level.

At 5’9″ and 215 lbs, Ingram’s compact size and acceleration has often drawn comparisons to all-time NFL leading rusher Emmitt Smith. However, the concept of NFL running backs carrying the ball 25-30 times a game and wearing down defenses is so 1992, and Coach Sean Payton is definitely an offensive innovator, not a traditionalist.

Considering Ingram’s circumstances, should his success be judged by the traditional criteria of rushing yards and touchdowns? Or should it be by yards per carry? The “team oriented” approach to judging Mark Ingram would be if his career with the Saints helps bring the team another or multiple Lombardi Trophies, regardless of statistics. However, Reggie Bush for all of his faults did that, and he was gone after only one more season.

My guess is that when it comes down to it, Mark Ingram’s value to the Saints will ultimately be judged by the same way it is for every other NFL player regardless of former Heisman Trophy winner or not. And that is by the principle that overrides both statistics and championships, presenting itself in the form of the question, “What have you done for me lately?”

Potential Saints Draft Selections: Part Two

Photo

The next pair of potential Saints draft picks I have analyzed are projected to be taken in later rounds. These players will help the teams need on defensive line and wide receiver.

Malik Jackson, DL, University of Tennessee

Jackson, projected as a fifth round pick in the draft, seems like he could be a good late round pickup. His body size, 6’5″ and 270 lbs, is similar to that of Saints nose tackle Shaun Rogers, just a little less weight. This could end up being to his advantage, as he runs a 4.84 40-yard dash; pretty quick for a big man.

In Jackson’s college career, he spent two years at USC before transferring and finishing up at Tennessee. While at Tennessee, Jackson recorded 52 tackles (104 total), 26 which were for a loss, 8 sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Looking at his tape, I was pretty impressed with Malik’s play. Being as big as he is, he has tremendous athletic ability. His arm length and speed go together great as he is able to fight off blocks and get to the quarterback. His talents were utilized often because he has experience playing as an interior tackle as well as a defensive end.

Playing inside he uses his massive size to plays violent, moving the pile and creating a new line of scrimmage. Off the edge, Jackson uses his speed to get around tackles to create havoc in the pocket. If the Saints are unable to get a good defensive lineman through free agency or re-sign one of their own, Jackson would be a great fit.

Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

Stephen Hill is another player who should be available late. He is projected to be taken in the sixth round. Hill is an interesting player, as he is widely thought of as being NFL ready due to his size and intangibles. Listed at 6’5″ and 206 lbs, Hill corresponds to a former Yellow Jacket that has made quite a name for himself in the NFL, Calvin Johnson, also known as “Megatron.”

Having only three seasons under his belt, Stephen contributed pretty well to his team, with his Junior year being his best. He gained 1,248 yards on 49 receptions (25.5 yards per catch), with nine of those receptions being touchdowns.

Watching Hill’s film I noticed he has great separation speed to go along with his good hands. Running a 4.49 40-yard dash, he used that to his advantage on deep routes and crossing patterns. On running plays, Hill also showed the ability to block well into the secondary, a trait that all the Saints receivers seem to have. With the possibility of losing either Marques Colston or Robert Meachem to another team, the Saints will have to look for a receiver to fill their place. Hill could serve as the tall, speedy possession receiver the Saints will need.

***

As the Saints will not have much money to spend on marquee players in free agency to fill holes, they will have to take advantage of their draft picks. The players I have discussed are not regarded as the “best” at their position, but I feel that they are worth taking a look at and are very realistic selections. With the draft being more than two months away, there will be tons of speculation as to who the Saints will keep, let go, or sign. So let the fun begin!

Potential Saints Draft Selections: Part One

Photo

With the 2011 NFL season in the books, the next big events are the free agency period and the NFL Draft. Aside from re-signing big names such as Brees, Colston, and Nicks, the Saints have a plethora of players that they will have to decide to either retain or let walk.

Instead of making a big splash in free agency, the draft will be the most likely area where holes will get filled. Currently the Saints have seven draft picks in the following rounds: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, two in the 6th, and 7th. As you may remember, in the 2011 draft the Saints traded away this years first round pick in order to get running back Mark Ingram. Right now, pending any free agent acquisitions or let-gos, the Saints’ glaring needs are all on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker and defensive line. They do have other areas that could use a little depth such as cornerback and even wide receiver or tight end, however.

After looking at many mock drafts, I have watched highlights and game films as well as dissected stats of a few players that have been repeatedly mentioned or that have looked intriguing. I have divided my research into two pairs of players. The following pair are ones that I think the Saints should target to bolster the teams talent at linebacker and cornerback.

Sean Spence, OLB, University of Miami

Projected as a second round pick, Spence would be identified as smaller linebacker. He is listed at 5’11″ and 228 lbs, which is similar to current Saints MLB Jonathan Vilma. In his four years at Miami, Spence had 170 solo tackles (318 total) with 47 being for a loss. He had 10.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and also an interception.

While looking at his playing style, Spence appears to be a great fit at OLB for the Saints. He is very quick for a linebacker, running a 4.58 40-yard dash. He uses great vision as the play develops and runs at good angles towards the ball carrier. Even though he might have a small frame for a linebacker, I noticed he was constantly around the ball. Another thing I saw was that Spence seemed to be a sure tackler, rarely letting a runner get away from him. As we know, the Saints struggle with tackling. Bringing in a good, aggressive tackler would be great for this defensive unit.

Jayron Hosley, CB, Virginia Tech

In another mock draft, Jayron Hosley is also projected as a second round pick. In three seasons at Virginia Tech (he is only a Junior), Jayron had 73 solo tackles (109 total) with 3.5 for loss. He was also responsible for 12 Hokie interceptions.

Hosley has been labeled as a NFL ready cornerback even at his young age. His playing style is very impressive. Listed as only 5’10″ and 171 pounds, Jayron is considerably smaller than the average NFL receiver, which is 6’1″. He makes up for his size with outstanding speed, running a 4.53 40-yard dash. Looking at his film, I noticed he could recover from a misstep and get back on the receivers hip. As the quarterback would release the ball, Jayron immediately looked for it in the air and went to it.

Along with being a corner, Jayron was a dangerous return man in college, getting 815 punt return yards on 68 returns, two of which were touchdowns. The Saints would get a great cover corner and an explosive returner if they could land this double-threat.

Saints Free Agency Preview: Defensive Ends

Photo

First off, a big thank you to Dave and the rest of you for offering me the opportunity to write on a regular basis here! I’m very glad to add my voice to the rest of the great staff here at CSC.

I’m going to start a free agency preview series, beginning with one of the Saints biggest weaknesses: defensive end. They currently have only four defensive ends signed to the roster for next year – Will Smith, Junior Galette, Greg Romeus and Cameron Jordan. I don’t know about you, but that does not inspire confidence in the team’s ability to rush the passer, no matter who the defensive coordinator is.

Saints Defensive End Depth Chart Last Year: Will Smith, Turk McBride, Cam Jordan, Jeff Charleston, Junior Galette, Greg Romeus (IR). McBride and Charleston are free agents, although those are probably the two that can be replaced easiest.

The Free Agents: Turk McBride had four tackles and two sacks all of last season, so he’s probably walking. Cam Jordan took over his starting spot early in the season, and never looked back. McBride played in eight games, only starting two of them. He won’t be missed.

Jeff Charleston had nine tackles and one sack, in ten games played. Of the two, Charleston is probably the most likely to come back, although it would likely be a one year, veteran minimum contract. Again, he wouldn’t be missed if he was allowed to walk.

The Rest of the Roster: Will Smith is the most accomplished member of the Saints defensive line, while Junior Galette is the best pass rusher on the team right now. Cam Jordan had a solid rookie season, and will hopefully improve with a full off-season and new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Greg Romeus is the big unknown here, having spent all of last year on injured reserve. Drafted in the seventh round out of Pitt last year, he was a great pass rusher in college. The team can only hope that translates well in his first healthy season.

One sentence free agency prediction: Jeff Charleston gets re-signed, Will Smith gets cut, and a top flight pass rusher (Cliff Avril, Mario Williams, etc.) gets brought in, adding depth in the draft.
