Super Bowl Commercials: HansDat's All-Time Favorites

This Super Bowl ad may actually be my favorite of all time, because it's the only one I remember from the magical and amazing Super Bowl XLIV. (AP Photo/CBS)

Today is Super Bowl Sunday, and with our attention freed up because our beloved Saints aren't playing, we can focus on the cool and fun commercials!! @YAY!!!!!@ #silverlining?

With Dave putting up that easy cash pay ad Friday on CSC, I was inspired to post this story about my all-time favorite Super Bowl commercials.

In my Super Bowl predictions, I forecast that the commercials this year will be just ok, with none that vault into "instant classic" status, so why not engage in some nostalgia and enjoy the good ole days of Super Bowl Ads.

Come along with me across the jump to see my favorites and read a bit about why I like(d) them so much. And after you've seen all those and commented below, feel free to post links to your own favorites and tell us why YOU like(d) them!

TERRY TATE, OFFICE LINEBACKER is my numero uno all-time favorite. Why? Because it combines aspect of football, the Theatre of the Absurd, and Office Space. Those are three things I enjoy separately, and when they're all together in one soft taco - YUM!! And don't forget the cover sheet on your TPS report.

MEAN JOE GREENE, "HEY KID, CATCH." This one hit me right between the eyes when I was a child, and it has stayed with me all these years.

1984 APPLE'S MACINTOSH AD This one also stuck with me, but I must admit that as a 13-year old, I really wasn't sure what it was all about...I mean, I had read Orwell's book and all, but I wasn't really doing much with computers back then.

BUDWEISER FROGS loved this one at first, but then it got old in a real hurry...

USUALLY THEY GO FOR TWO Clever ad with an even cleverer punchline.

SALES ARE DOWN Call me a rube, call me a simpleton, but I do very much enjoy a "silly monkeys in suits" commercial now and again...

* * *

OK, now that I've shared some of my all-time favorite Super Bowl ads, jump in and tell me what you think of them, and let me know what your favorites are, and link to them if they're not already here so we can all enjoy them, too!

Saints' Willie Roaf Gets The Call From The Hall (of Fame)

Now you'll get to see both Rickey Jackson and Willie Roaf's busts if you go through these doors in Canton, Ohio. (Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images)

Willie Roaf, who played left tackle for the New Orleans Saints from 1993-2001, has become the second long-time Saints player to be elected to the NFL Hall of Fame.

Roaf joins Jack Butler, Dermontti Dawson, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Curtis Martin as members of the 2012 NFL Hall of Fame Induction Class.

Make the jump for more on the now Hall-of-Fame career of William Layton Roaf...

Roaf, who played collegiately at Louisiana Tech University, was drafted in the first round of the 1993 Draft by the New Orleans Saints with the 8th overall selection.

The Saints had to trade star LB and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Pat Swilling to the Detroit Lions get him, and while it tore up fans to see the Dome Patrol broken up, it turned out pretty sweet for the Saints after all.

Roah anchored the left side of the Saints offensive line for nine seasons, earning seven Pro Bowl and two First Team All-Pro selections during that time.

He played in only seven games in 2001 due to injury, and was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in March of 2002. Roaf played for the Chiefs from 2002-2005, going to the Pro Bowl four more times, and making All-Pro once again before retiring in 2006.

Roaf was named to the NFL's All-Decade Teams of both the 1990s and 2000s, and by 2009 had become the Saints' most awarded player. (source)

The Times-Picayune/nola.com had this immediate story available online, and had this Tom Benson statement:

"We're glad to congratulate William Roaf in his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He meant a great deal to our team during his career with us. He was the best player on our team during his entire tenure with us, one of the top players in the history of our franchise and one of the NFL's greatest at his position."

The Saints official site posted this story following the announcement.

Roaf joins Dome Patroller Rickey Jackson (HOF Class of 2010) as the only players to play the majority of their careers with the Saints in the NFL Hall of Fame

Join your fellow Saints fans in celebrating the career and this great achievement by Willie Roaf in the comment section below.

Hail, Willie!

NY Giants Powered by Pizza

Photo

Every Friday during the NFL season we have a tradition here on Canal Street Chronicles: our weekly prediction contest. It's been a regular fixture for years now. As it turns out, the New York Giants have their own Friday tradition during the NFL season: eating Umberto's pizza.

It's a ritual that dates back to Michael Strahan, who started ordering pizza from Umberto's four years ago during their previous Super Bowl winning season. Yesterday, with the Giants preparing for another big game away from home, the famous Long Island pizzeria kept the tradition alive by hopping on a plane and delivering 15 pizzas to the team all the way in Indianapolis. It's been all over the local NY news and was big enough news to make Yahoo!'s front page slideshow, right next to the story about Tom Brady's athletic sisters (see right).

All of this, of course, has absolutely nothing to do with the Saints so you're probably wondering why the hell I'm even mentioning this. But it has everything to do with football and food and I believe it was the ancient and wise poet Meatloaf who once said, "Two out of three ain't bad."

As you might have guessed, there's another reason I've decided to devote an entire front page post to this topic. I'm a huge f*@#%$ Umberto's pizza lover!

Most of you know I grew up on Long Island, which inherently means I grew up eating their famous pizza. And, to put it quite simply, they make the greatest pizza that's ever been made in the history of pizza making on this planet. Yeah, I just said that. You can go ahead and name your favorite pizza place and try to convince me otherwise but I won't be listening, because I know you're wrong. Unless your favorite pizza joint also happens to be Umberto's. If you've never tasted the cheesy, crispy, garlicky goodness of a Grandma slice, you have no room to talk. Just ask Michael Strahan.

Am I biased? Yeah, a little. Am I friends with the family that owns the restaurant? I might be. Did I work at two of their establishments on two separate occasions in my younger days? It's possible. Do I love it so much that I have unaltered personal photos of a Grandma pie talking to me?

190356_658037121199_2806666_36860968_6692256_n_medium

But if it wasn't as good as I claim then they wouldn't be voted Long Island's best pizza year in and year out, they wouldn't be the best thing that Rocco DiSpirito ever ate and a bunch of very large and very hungry men wouldn't have it delivered every Friday for years now across state lines into New Jersey.

I know this has nothing to do with the Saints but we're all New Orleanians either in actuality or at heart, which means the other thing we're all passionate about aside from football is food. And Umberto's, my friend, is as good as food gets. So the next time you're within a 50 mile radius of Nassau County, NY, be sure to hit up Umberto's and see what all the fuss is about. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Also, as Saints fans, I'm sure we can certainly relate to not only the culinary but the superstitious tendencies of the pizza-loving Giants. After all, where would Drew Brees be without his cheesy mac?

SUPER BOWL XLVI: NEW YORK GIANTS VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

It all comes down to this.

On Sunday, February 5, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots will meet in Super Bowl XLVI (6:00 PM ET, NBC) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, when the Giants defeated the Patriots 17-14 in one of the most exciting Super Bowls in history.

"It's a great chess match with two elite quarterbacks and two teams with great traditions and great histories," says NBC's AL MICHAELS. "It should be a terrific matchup."

Super Bowl XLVI is the first Super Bowl in which both starting quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl MVP award. New York quarterback ELI MANNING passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns - including the game-winning 13-yarder to PLAXICO BURRESS with 35 seconds remaining - in Super Bowl XLII and was named the game's MVP. New England quarterback TOM BRADY has been named Super Bowl MVP twice (XXXVI, XXXVIII) and is one of only four players in NFL history to win the award multiple times, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers JOE MONTANA (XVI, XIX, XXIV), TERRY BRADSHAW (XIII, XIV) and BART STARR(I, II).

"I expect greatness from this game," says NBC analyst CRIS COLLINSWORTH.

The game is also the third quarterback rematch in Super Bowl history:

For the first time in NFL history, the Super Bowl will feature two teams coming off three-point victories. Both Championship Games were decided by three points and the combined differential of six points is the closest ever for the Championship Games. An average of 53.7 million viewers watched the AFC and NFC Championship Games, making it the most watched Championship Game Sunday since January 10, 1982.

"This is a big game for the Giants organization," says Manning, who is one of only two players (Pro Football Hall of Famer JIM KELLY, 1990) to take his team to the Super Bowl with back-to-back 300-yard passing games in the Divisional Playoff and Championship Game. "This is a big game for every single player who's going to be playing in this game. You hope that you can go out there and play the best football that you've ever played. That's always the goal."

New York has won seven NFL championships (1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990, 2007), the third-most in NFL history. The Giants enter Super Bowl XLVI having won five games in a row, outscoring opponents 141-67. Head coach TOM COUGHLIN has guided the team to a second Super Bowl appearance in his tenure, joining BILL PARCELLS as the only coaches in franchise history to accomplish the feat.

"I'm delighted and excited," says Coughlin about advancing to Super Bowl XLVI. "These guys have gone out and done it against the best that we've played."

The Giants (9-7) - who defeated Atlanta (10-6), Green Bay (15-1) and San Francisco (13-3) - are only the second team to reach the Super Bowl via playoff victories over three opponents with a better regular-season record than its own (Arizona, 2008).

In the NFC Championship Game, Manning passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants' 20-17 overtime victory at San Francisco. Wide receiverVICTOR CRUZ had 10 catches for 142 yards and his 10 receptions tied for the second-most in a playoff game by a Giant. Wide receiver MARIO MANNINGHAMcaught one of Manning's touchdown passes and is the first player in franchise history with a TD catch in three consecutive games in a single postseason.

"It feels great because it was a tough game," says Manning. "We had to fight for every yard that we got. I'm just excited about having another chance to go to the Super Bowl and play New England."

Defensively, defensive end JUSTIN TUCK - who had two sacks against New England in Super Bowl XLII - had 1.5 sacks as the Giants recorded three sacks against the 49ers.

"Our confidence level is high and we feel good about where we are as a team," says Tuck. "We feel confident that we can play with anybody."

On special teams, DEVIN THOMAS had two fumble recoveries on punts which lead to 10 points. In overtime, JACQUIAN WILLIAMS forced a fumble on a punt return that was recovered by Thomas. The turnover set up LAWRENCE TYNES' game-winning 31-yard field goal. Tynes is the only player in NFL history to score the winning points in two playoff overtime games. In the 2007 NFC Championship Game at Green Bay, Tynes converted a 47-yard field goal in OT to send the Giants to Super Bowl XLII.

"It's my second NFC Championship Game and my second game-winner," says Tynes. "It's amazing."

The Patriots have won 10 consecutive games, with the team's last loss a 24-20 defeat to the Giants in Week 9. New England has advanced to its seventh Super Bowl and fifth since the 2001 season.

Head coach BILL BELICHICK and QB Brady are headed to their fifth Super Bowl together, the most ever by a head coach and starting quarterback combination. The duo had previously been tied with Pro Football Hall of Famers TOM LANDRY-ROGER STAUBACH (Dallas), CHUCK NOLL-Bradshaw (Pittsburgh) andMARV LEVY-Kelly (Buffalo).

"It's certainly a great honor to be representing the AFC in this game," says Belichick. "We're looking forward to the opportunity versus the Giants, who are a great team. They've had a great year and we know this is going to be our toughest game. We have a lot of work cut out for us, but it's exciting to have the opportunity to meet the challenge."

Brady passed for 239 yards in the Patriots' 23-20 win over Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game. He became the fourth quarterback in NFL history to surpass the 5,000-yard mark in the playoffs (5,009), joining BRETT FAVRE (5,855), Montana (5,772) and PEYTON MANNING (5,389).

"We're a pretty mentally tough team," says Brady, who will start his fifth Super Bowl and tie Pro Football Hall of Famer JOHN ELWAY for the most Super Bowl starts at QB. "There's really some resiliency. We've shown it all season. We're always going to fight to the end. It's great to be part of a team like this."

Against the Ravens, New England's defense had three sacks and an interception while holding Baltimore to 20 points.

"Our defense saved us," says Brady. "I'm proud of this team and my teammates."

With the Patriots trailing 20-16, Brady rushed for a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. It marked the first go-ahead rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter of Brady's career in both the regular season and playoffs. Brady is also just the third QB to rush for a fourth-quarter game-winning TD in the postseason, joining KENNY STABLER (1976) and BILLY VOLEK (2007).

In his career, Brady is 16-5 (.762) in the postseason and his 16 playoff wins are tied with Montana for the most in NFL history. Belichick has compiled a 17-6 (.739) postseason record and his 17 playoff wins are tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer JOE GIBBS for the third-most in NFL history. They trail only Pro Football Hall of Famers Landry (20) and DON SHULA (19).

So, for old time's sake, we're taking one last trip around the bases before officially putting our contest to bed for the 2011 season.

By now you should all know what to do and how to do it, but just in case you don't, you can catch up on the rules of the game right here. As always, all are welcome to partake, including non-Saints fans. This is a great opportunity for those readers who have never signed up or commented to finally dip their toe in the water.

Let's get this Super Bowl prediction party started! Good luck to everyone!
