NFL Offensive Player of the Year 2011: Drew Brees Wins After Historic Season

When you break one of the most storied records in the history of professional football, you better be named Offensive Player of the Year.

And that’s exactly what happened with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees on Saturday, when he was named Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press

Not to be confused with Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year is an award based on stats, and Brees was a fantasy player’s dream in 2011.

He broke Dan Marino’s single-season passing yards mark with 5,476. Well maybe broke isn’t a strong enough word. Considering he put up 392 yards more and passed the mark with over a full game to go…he obliterated one of the most storied records in the league.

He also broke the completion percentage record by connecting on 71.2 percent of his throws.  The old record was 70.6 set by none other than Brees. While his 46 TDs didn’t break Tom Brady’s record of 50, it was 12 better than his previous career-high.

Oh, did I also mention he didn’t lose a single fumble this year?

Fourteen interceptions is the only blemish on this spotless resume and it’s the only reason Aaron Rodgers was still in the conversation for the award. His 2011 season was great as well (4,643 yards, 45 TDs and six INTs, four fumbles lost), but it’s just not as good as Brees'.

Comparing the receiving corps of the two shows us that the Packers had a much more stacked unit (Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, James Jones, Jermichael Finley) than the Saints (Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Robert Meachem, Devery Henderson, Jimmy Graham).

While the MVP debate is going to rage on with the Packers 15-1 regular season going up against the Saints 13-3, there is no question that when you are going by statistics, Brees had the best 2011 season, and quite frankly one of the best of all time.

Breaking News: Former Saints Offensive Tackle Willie Roaf in Hall of Fame

Saturday afternoon the NFL announced its 2012 Hall of Fame class. Former Saints offensive tackle Willie Roaf was chosen among the group of six which also included Saints advisor Cortez Kennedy, Jack Butler, Curtis Martin, Chris Doleman and Dermontti Dawson.

Willie Roaf becomes the second Saints player to be voted into Canton, joining linebacker Ricky Jackson. Roaf played 13 seasons in the NFL and was voted to 11 Pro Bowls. Roaf finished his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and made up a great offensive line in Kansas City before retiring in 2005.

But it is likely Roaf, who played 131 games for the Saints, will go into Canton as a member of the Saints.

Assuming that is correct, the Saints can project three Hall of Famers to be inducted into Canton over a course of 15-plus years—I'm counting Drew Brees as a shoo-in right now.

If Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks continue to play at an elite level, they too could join Roaf, Jackson and Brees in Canton one day. And second-year tight end Jimmy Graham is beginning to make football fanatics believe he too can join the elusive club some time in the future.

The Roaf induction is sweet for a New Orleans Saints franchise that had no player awarded Hall of Fame honors prior to 2010.

Aeneas Williams, from New Orleans, was up for induction but failed to make the final cut. As such, the former Ram and Cardinal will have many more opportunities to be voted in by the media.

Notable omissions from this class are former New York Giants, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells, Charles Haley (winner of five Super Bowls between the San Francisco 49ers and Cowboys) and Cris Carter, the second best receiver of all time using many metrics.

All six players will be inducted in early August in Canton, Ohio.

NFL Offseason 2012: New Orleans Saints Bring in Ken Flajole as Secondary Coach

The New Orleans Saints have hired on a new secondary coach in Ken Flajole.

James Varney of The Times-Picayune announced that the Saints brought in Flajole on Thursday. No official announcement has been made from the Saints, but Flajole is expected to start work immediately.

This hire by the Saints makes a ton of sense. New Orleans hired Steve Spagnuolo last month to take over as defensive coordinator and Flajole held that position in St. Louis when Spagnuolo was the head coach of the Rams. Flajole spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator in St. Louis.

Most coaches have certain people that they like to bring along with them. This is natural in most sports because coaches understand they can trust a coach whom they have worked with before. Flajole falls in that category for Spagnuolo.

Most of the time, coordinators are allowed to pick their positional coaches, but at they very least they have a ton of input when it comes to selecting those guys. There is no doubt Spagnuolo must have put in a good word for the Saints to bring in Flajole.

Overall, it is a pretty good hire for the Saints organization.

It is a bit troubling that during three years in St. Louis, Flajole never had the Rams' defense ranked higher than 19th in the NFL. Granted, the Rams did not have a ton of defensive talent and Flajole will just be working with the secondary in New Orleans. The Saints have a large amount of talent in their secondary, so there is no reason that Flajole cannot succeed with that unit.

Before holding the coordinator spot in St. Louis, Flajole held various other jobs with NFL teams. He coached the Carolina Panthers' linebackers from 2003-2008 and the Seattle Seahawks' linebackers in 2000. Flajole was also the secondary coach for the Seahawks in 1999 and 2001-2002.

Flajole also coached with the Green Bay Packers and a couple different schools in the college ranks.

Despite what he was able to do (or unable to do) in St. Louis, his track record his good. The Seahawks had some pretty good defenses in the early 2000s, as well as the Panthers, and Flajole had a big hand in that.

I am confident in his abilities and excited to see what he can do in New Orleans. If Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton have enough faith in Flajole to bring him in, we should not second-guess his talents.
