Quarterback Luke McCown will try to hang out a little bit longer than he did last year with the New Orleans Saints after agreeing to a one-year deal with the team this afternoon.
It could have been taken as an April Fool’s joke, but it’s no laughing matter as the Saints will soon begin of-fseason workouts and didn’t have anyone to back up Drew Brees.
McCown was brought in last year to bolster a little depth and competition at the position while Brees was still in contract negotiations as a free agent and Chase Daniel was the official “starter.”
Of course even when Brees returned McCown was kept around to see what he could do during preseason. The results were not good for the third-stringer at the time and he was released just before the start of the 2012 season.
He was scooped up by the Atlanta Falcons where he played backup to Matt Ryan on a one-year contract. McCown’s position should be relatively safe unless the Saints bring in more competition at the position in free agency or the 2013 NFL Draft.
While he is a capable backup, McCown isn’t going to knock your socks off with his stats. Since being in the NFL in 2004 he has only 2,035 yards passing with nine touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
