Saints Nation: Saints' Most Glaring Need Is a Defensive Playmaker

I think we can all agree that the Saints need to re-sign Drew Brees, Marques Colston and Carl Nicks. All three of those players are key components to the historically supreme offense the Saints showcase and retaining them has to be of utmost importance. That said, for the second consecutive offseason, the biggest "upgrade" the Saints will have to seek is a playmaker on defense that can change the complexion of a game and that can continually force opposing team's offenses to gameplan around him. This is nothing new. The Saints still haven't recovered from the loss of the 33 year old version of Darren Sharper back in 2009. That's what we're essentially calling for here, a difference maker of that caliber. If this post seems familiar it's because I wrote the exact same thing a year ago. If you read the article I posted 12 months ago, the point in this exact same. And again, I don't really care which position this "playmaker" plays, just as l...

Should the New Orleans Saints Franchise Tag Drew Brees?

Drew Brees’s contract extension is taking longer than everyone had hoped and some have been wondering if the New Orleans Saints are going to franchise tag Brees. I do not think it would be in either party’s best interest if Brees were to be franchised. I think the Saints need to do everything possible to get a deal done for Brees as fast as they can so they do not have to use their franchise tag on him. Brees is obviously the Saints’ number one free agent priority but they have other players they are going to have to address. Other key unrestricted free agents the Saints have are OG Carl Nicks, WRs Robert Meachem and Marques Colston, and CB Tracy Porter. The Saints would love to keep all of them, but with Brees expected to get a big payday it does not seem very realistic that the Saints can retain them all. However, if the Saints do not use their franchise tag on Drew Brees then they could potentially use it on one of their other free agents such as Nicks, Meachem, or Coslton. I per...

New Orleans Saints Have Defense on Their Minds

Head coach Sean Payton made the official announcement that the New Orleans Saints have added three new coaches to their coaching staff. The most notable of the coaching additions is the hiring of Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator. In addition to the new defensive coordinator the Saints hired Ken Fajole as the secondary coach and Andre Curtis as assistant secondary coach. Spagnuolo is best known for the architect of the New York Giants defense during their Super Bowl XLII win and should bring a lot to the table defensively. Fajole also has a great track record as he has worked with many different defenses throughout his career and has made his players better. Fajole joined the Saint Louis Rams in 2009 and was previously the linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers. Under Fajole’s coaching the Panthers’ linebackers were a staple of that defense. Curtis joined the Saints after spending the 2009-2011 seasons with the Saint Louis Rams. During his time with the Rams he was the d...

Former Seahawk Heath Evans: “Mike Holmgren didn’t coach his star players … I couldn’t get out of fast enough.”

With such a busy week last week we didn’t have time to get to this, but former NFL fullback Heath Evans, who spent four years in Seattle under Mike Holmgren before moving to New England to wind up his career playing for Bill Belichick, had some strong words for the current Browns president in Pro Football Weekly: Evans said he was “ready to retire” because of the clubhouse cancers he encountered in Seattle, and he blames Holmgren for fostering that kind of environment. “Bunch of selfish guys,” Evans said. “Everything from racism to ‘I want the ball’ to ‘It’s all about me.’ Bad locker room.” Evans said what separates Belichick from Holmgren — and from almost any other head coach he has been around — was accountability. “Mike Holmgren didn’t coach his star players,” Evans said. “It’s really kind of true. The most talented football teams I was ever on were those Seahawks teams.  But th...

And the #1 play of the season had to be this one. Brees breaking a record labelled "unbreakable" and untouchable for so long. While this season didn't have the final success of the 2009 season, this moment was the culmination of a truly special season that saw tons of passing yards, points and wins. This is just another historic moment in the remarkable tenure Drew Brees has had as a member of the New Orleans Saints. Report: Brees’ agent “baffled” at slow pace of contract talks

Drew Brees and the Saints have said so many times that both sides want to get a long-term contract done that it seems like a mere formality that things will get worked out long before it’s time for Brees to get to work at the Saints’ first offseason minicamp. But one report suggests that contract…

Saints Nation's Top 10 Plays of the Saints' 2011 Season: #2 4th and Inches Stop @ Falcons

The second best play of the season essentially wrapped up a road win in overtime against the Falcons, and with it the division. The Falcons gave the ball on 4th and inches to Michael Turner and the defensive line came up with their stop of the season on the road. This video does a great job of breaking down the entire play and building up the moment. You can start watching this play around the 4:45 mark and it talks about it and includes interviews for a good 2 minutes. Enjoy! For NFL fans, the saddest day of the year is today

The 2011 NFL regular season was remarkable, but for rabid fans of the greatest game on Earth, today is the saddest day of the year. The season began on September 8, 2011 with an epic contest between the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers and culminated last night in Super Bowl XLVI. In between, NFL fans were treated to some fantastic football. Now, seemingly as quickly as the season started, it’s over, and it’s over for the next 200-something number of days. The 2012 NFL regular season will likely start on September 6, the first Thursday in September, 213 days from today. For diehard fans of the NFL, the next 213 days cannot pass quickly enough. Sure, there will be some NFL related news over the next seven months- the combine, the start of an actual free agency period this year in March, the NFL draft,, the inevitable various NFL player arrests, but nothing replaces the energy and excitement of watching regular season games on Sundays. It was a remarkable run for t...
