Saints look for answer at running back with Terrance
West – (Yardbarker)
The Saints will be bringing in veteran running back Terrance West to help out with the lineup while Mark Ingram is serving his suspension.
The recent talk in Saints camp was that the team had former Saint Tim Hightower in at minicamp and were to be looking at Jamaal Charles. The name Terrance West didn’t come up until about an hour or two before the team signed him on Wednesday.
After the 2016 Season West had with the Baltimore Ravens, the Saints likely just needed to see if he was healthy. In 2017, West was limited to four starts with a soft-tissue injury that derailed his season.
But in 2016, he posted a solid 1,010 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns. That 2016 total included 236 yards receiving. With Mark Ingram missing the first four games of the season, West is obviously a good looking fill in.
He’s 5-foot-10 and 225-pounds. Very Ingram-like in build. And he’s only 27.
It’s hard not to overlook the obvious here. This is the final year of the current contract the Saints have with Mark Ingram. If talks go south or if Ingram decides he wants to go elsewhere, West would look to be an ideal fit to be the Boom to Alvin Kamara’s Zoom.
Just looking at this year though, Terrance West, can provide the Saints with much needed veteran depth at running back. If he’s healthy that is. Someone to give Ingram and Kamara a chance to catch their breath when needed.
Others the Saints looked at
There’s no word on terms of West’s contract yet but the guess would be it will be a one-year prove it deal. The Saints also had Tim Hightower and Jamaal Charles in for lookovers. But Terrance West has youth on his side and isn’t far off from his last good season.
Demarco Murray was also reported to be contacted by the Saints but wants to be in a system where he is the feature back. Obviously that’s not what the Saints would want from him with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram doing what they do.
