Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore in Saints Hall of Fame – (Yardbarker)

Undrafted rookie free agent legends Lance Moore and Pierre Thomas are to be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in September.

It’s rare for undrafted rookies to have successful NFL careers. It’s rare for them to ever see action in a regular season game. But former Saints Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore became stars. The two will be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in a ceremony on September 14 to memorialize what they did and how they got there.

The careers of Pierre Thomas and Lance Moore should serve as a reminder to any undrafted player. There is a place for you in New Orleans. All you have to do is prove yourself. There have been bigger success stories, guys like Kurt Warner and John Randle. But in New Orleans, Moore and Thomas might as well have statues put up in front of the Superdome for what they mean to Who Dat Nation.

Both were instrumental in getting the Saints to and winning a Super Bowl.

Pierre Thomas

Pierre Thomas was undrafted out of the University of Illinois in 2007. The Saints would end up making him the prototype that led to the way they use Mark Ingram in Sean Payton’s offense. His best year as a Saint came in the epic 2009 Season. That year, Thomas had 1,095 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns alongside Reggie Bush. In fact, he outperformed Bush that season.

In his eight years with the Saints, Thomas would produce a total of 3,745 yards rushing and 2,608 yards receiving and 40 touchdowns.

Lance Moore

Lance Moore went undrafted out of Toledo in 2005. He landed on the Saints practice squad the year before Sean Payton and Drew Brees came to town. It took a while for him to work his way into the Saints offense. But he eventually proved himself to be a shifty slot receiver and one of Drew Brees’ most reliable targets.

His best year as a Saint came in 2012 where he went for 1,041 yards and six touchdowns. In that year he also logged 55 first downs. In seven years seeing starter action, Lance Moore recorded 4,271 yards receiving with 38 touchdowns.

The legacy

Both of these players were instrumental in the construction of Sean Payton’s offensive style. To this day, both are mentioned when the Saints are looking to add wide receivers or running backs to the roster.

There’s always someone mentioned as being the next Pierre Thomas or Lance Moore. And for good reason. The success of these two makes the annual release of the names of undrafted rookie free agents the Saints have signed something to look forward to. You never know who the next diamond in the rough may be.

The Saints will give them all a chance. All you have to do is show you’re up to the task.
