November 14 looms large on Saints calendar – (Yardbarker)
November 14 looks to be an epic matchup for the Saints as the Los Angeles Rams come to town with a crazy hype train predicting a Super Bowl for them.
Every year there’s a new Dream Team that has everybody talking. For 2018 it’s the Los Angeles Rams. They’ll be coming to New Orleans for an afternoon contest with the Saints on November 14. You might need to go ahead and start looking for tickets to that one soon.
The Rams were one of the biggest surprises in the NFC in 2017, as were the Saints. They got the better of our boys in Los Angeles last year. It was a game that saw the Saints fight back hard to make it an interesting 26-20 finish. But the Rams looked pretty darn good then.
They’ve only gotten better in 2018. They added Ndamukong Suh to play alongside defensive tackle Aaron Donald, already considered the best defensive player in the NFL. They also added former Saint Brandin Cooks at wide receiver. Sam Shields at cornerback. You get the picture. They Rams went at free agency with a vengeance.
That’s the kind of thing that makes people start using terms like Dream Team. But those don’t always work out. The Eagles assembled such a team a few years ago and it flopped. They had to start from scratch basically before winning the most recent Super Bowl.
But the Rams were already pretty good before the additions. That makes them a little different. Jared Goff is coming into his own as an NFL quarterback and running back Todd Gurley is one of the tops in the league.
But the Saints
The Saints have also made improvements and they had their own story of renewal in 2017. The formidable Rams defense that stymied everybody but Alvin Kamara last year will see a revamped receiving corps.
The Saints defense that gave up 354 yards passing to Jared Goff in 2017 is also better. On paper at least. But the additions of Marcus Davenport, Demario Davis and Patrick Robinson should make the Saints much improved.
This is one of those games that will either be a barn-burner or a slugfest. I’m betting on the slugfest. This one is in the Dome. That’s a whole different story. And the Rams will certainly be reminding their players of their last visit to New Orleans and the 49-21 shellacking put on Greg Williams’ vaunted defense.
This November matchup will tell you everything you need to know about how good the 2018 Saints are. Regardless of records going in.
