Michael Thomas may be best all around receiver in
NFL – (Yardbarker)

Pro Football Focus has been running a series ranking NFL receivers by route run. Michael Thomas has shown up in the top five in almost every category.

Warning: In this article you’ll be doing a deep dive into the kind of NFL esoterica Who Dat Dish doesn’t typically cover. We prefer to paint in broad strokes. We’re not big on play by play analysis or the discussion of tactics and formations. Why? Because there are other sites that do it better and, honestly, it starts seeming a little too much like math sometimes. But a recent series of pieces from Pro Football Focus, doing what they do best, on NFL wide receivers and their routes puts Michael Thomas in such an amazing light that it deserves to be covered here.

The discussion is route trees. That’s the various types of route a wide receiver might run. In the modern NFL, there are typically players who excel at one small piece of the overall route tree. If you get really deep into draft analysis of wide receivers coming out of college each year, you’ll inevitably see mention of how they do in certain aspects of the tree.

This is part of the era of specialization in sports in general. You don’t just have a running back. You have one that’s expected to excel in one area. Just like in baseball where you have a pitcher who’s a dedicated closer or starter or eighth inning set-up guy.

The Saints, over the past several years, have had receivers who were third down specialists, slot guys, like Willie Snead. Go route guys like Brandin Cooks and Ted Ginn Jr. But there’s also typically a number one receiver who is expected to do a whole host of different things well. Marques Colston was on of those guys.

But maybe in the entire history of the Saints organization, there has never been a multi-threat receiver like Michael Thomas. From the PFF article, here’s how he breaks down in different aspects of the route tree and where he ranks in each in the NFL.
