The Saints were absolutely gifted a win by the Browns Sunday, and I don’t feel guilty at all. Okay, I may have felt a little bad for the soon to be unemployed kicker, but that feeling passed quickly. New Orleans is 1-1 now not the usual 0-2 start we gave grown accustomed to. The black and gold were 3 for 12 on third downs and are at 33 percent the first two games, this is a problem. Drew Brees was efficient but missed on a few plays the kind he usually hits on. The team ran for just over 60 yards, mostly by Kamara and it’s obvious they miss Mark Ingram. Mike Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr both put the ball on the turf and as a team they are minus 3 on the turnover ratio. That is tied for 29th in the NFL and is a glaring deficiency.
The defense was improved from the previous game and Marcus Williams, Cam Jordan and Demario Davis were excellent. Others played well also like Sheldon and Marshon Lattimore come to mind. One who played badly was Ken Crawley who let Antonio Callaway get behind him on a fourth and 5 with less than 2 minutes left in the game for game tying touchdown. On a positive note Taysom Hill had an electric kick return, and if the Saints are smart, should be in that role for the rest of the season. Sometimes it is better to be lucky but this team is supposed to be good. Still, at 1-1 they are in a much better position than usual and maybe they can put it all together in time to beat the hated Falcons Sunday.
