The New Orleans Saints promoted linebacker Vince Biegel to the active roster on Friday, prompting several related roster moves. Biegel, who signed with New Orleans’ practice squad early this month, was a Green Bay Packers 2017 fourth round draft pick but released during roster cuts in 2018. Biegel was probably promoted to the roster in anticipation of linebacker Manti Te’o’s absence this week against the Atlanta Falcons, and potentially longer as he deals with a knee injury.
Biegel’s promotion meant that second-year cornerback Arthur Maulet was released to open up a spot on the 53-man roster. Maulet competed with several other young defensive backs to make the team, even outlasting two rookie draft picks. But he didn’t play any reps on defense and hadn’t appeared at all since registering 20 special teams snaps in the season opener. The Saints probably saw this move coming, having added linebacker Darnell Sankey to the practice squad on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Saints add well-traveled LB Darnell Sankey to practice squadUpdated: Saints work out 3 linebackers on FridayAnd since Biegel left the practice squad for the active roster, a hole opened up for rookie quarterback J.T. Barrett, who was released on Wednesday. Barrett appears to be the swing man on the practice squad, coming and going as the team requires to shuffle players on and off the unit of reserves. For reference, here’s a quick timeline of Barrett’s moves:
Aug. 30: waived during final roster cuts
Sept. 1: re-signed to Saints practice squad
Sept. 7: released
Sept. 9: re-signed
Sept. 19: released
Sept. 21: re-signed
It’s very likely that this isn’t the last time Barrett will be released and re-signed in about 48 hours. It’s also quite possible that the Saints will make more roster moves between now and kickoff in Atlanta on Sunday, Sept. 23. So keep an eye out for updates.
