The acquisition today of Giants cornerback Eli Apple doesn’t mean the Saints are done with trades. There’s a week to go and Patrick Peterson still isn’t happy. The Saints took a big step forward in addressing concerns at cornerback today by making a deal to bring in Giants cornerback Eli Apple. He’s young, 23-years old, with plenty of upside and maybe just in need of a better locker room to take him to the next level. But with a week to go before the NFL trade deadline, there may still be more moves afoot with Patrick Peterson still unhappy in Arizona and the Jaguars, with Jalen Ramsey, still in desperate need of a quarterback.Patrick Peterson, possibly speaking through his cousin via Twitter, has said he wants out of Arizona and would like to come to New Orleans. Without a doubt one of the top cover corners in the NFL, a deal for Peterson would be a huge investment for the Saints. There would have to be a reshuffling of contracts for starters to free up cap space. But Saints players like Cameron Jordan and Mark Ingram have been vocal on Twitter about wanting @P2 on the roster and may be willing to make some things happen. But one thing the Saints are seriously lacking is draft capital. The move for Eli Apple took their fourth rounder next year and they’re already without a first and third due to deals for Marcus Davenport and Teddy Bridgewater. So a player or two would likely also have to be involved.@p2 what’s really good?!!! 👀 t.co/XoGB9PXaCa— Mark Ingram II (@MarkIngram22) October 23, 2018I’m going to throw this one out there. As much as I love the thought of Patrick Peterson in Black and Gold, how about Jalen Ramsey?Ironically, the people over at Pro Football Focus have Ramsey graded behind Eli Apple currently despite Ramsey’s star-power and ability to suck up media attention. But, right now, the Jaguars are a mess.Their glaring need is at quarterback having benched Blake Bortles and resorting to Cody Kessler in their last game. They’ll keep trying to make Bortles work as starter for the time being, but they’re in definite need of an upgrade and the Saints just happen to have a possible answer in Teddy Bridgewater. The question is whether or not either team would want to part ways with either player. Bridgewater is viewed by many as the most likely heir apparent to Drew Brees though Taysom Hill is certainly making a strong argument. And Jalen Ramsey is viewed as a leader on the Jaguars defense. But the deal would be an obvious player for player move though Ramsey’s contract would mean the Saints would have to do some wiggling to make things work on the money side. It’s not Patrick Peterson. But I’m feeling pretty strong about a secondary of Marshon Lattimore, Eli Apple and Jalen Ramsey. That lineup would have serious best in the league potential. Next: Saints bring in Eli Apple for draft picks The team is already better with the addition of Eli Apple. But after him and Lattimore, there are still questions of depth in a pass-happy NFL. Better to throw enough players into the mix that your problem becomes putting a solid starter at nickel. Fortune favors the bold as the old adage goes.
