Brother Martin blanks Scotlandville, 30-0, in Division I playoff opener – (Crescent City Sports) Saints News

NEW ORLEANS – High school football playoffs are finally here. Thanksgiving almost is, too, but if you turned on the radio, you might think it’s December. With the temperature down to 50 degrees and a pregame drizzle, it sure felt like a December night in Louisiana. No. 6 seed Brother Martin showed no weakness against No. 11 Scotlandville, winning 30-0 in a Division I select first-round playoff game at Tad Gormley Stadium. The Crusaders wanted to run the ball, and windy conditions made it even easier for Brother Martin to dedicate their efforts to it. The results were 43 rushes for 198 yards in the game.Junior running back Chris Smith found the endzone three times in this one, totaling 134 yards rushing on 20 attempts. Alternating with Smith was Jaylon Spears, who also ran well, running 17 times for 89 yards.“We had to come out and run hard,” Smith said.Brother Martin head coach Mark Bonis was happy to see his running backs healthy at this point of the season.“We thought we were going to have a lot of depth at running back this year, and we did at the beginning but got banged up early. So, we’re just starting to get all of them back. It’s good having four or five guys, and we only really showed two or three. You could call this one payback, as Scotlandville won playoff games against Brother Martin in 2016 and 2017, both games held in Baton Rouge.“The last few years they knocked us out of the playoffs. We just kept that in our heads and let it go,” Smith added. In just four minutes, Brother Martin scored on their first drive when freshman quarterback Garrett Mmahat connected with LJ Gilyot on a 20-yard pass to take the initial lead with 7:13 in the first quarter, capping a nine-play, 69-yard drive.Jack Landry made a 34-yard kick on the next possession, and Smith scored on a 20-yard touchdown two drives later to give Brother Martin a 16-0 lead going into halftime. The Crusaders held Scotlandville to three-and-outs on 7 of their 10 possessions in the game. Senior linebacker Beau Ranlett finished with two sacks, and senior defensive back Michael Faust added one, as well.“We always want to be playing our best football toward the end of the year,” Brother Martin coach Mark Bonis said.Bonis knows his young offensive line is coming along.“You can’t run the ball without a good offensive line, so I gotta give credit to all those guys.”Scotlandville senior quarterback Cameron Armstead was held in check in terms of passing, completing only 6 of 11 passes for 66 yards but was successful running the ball, carrying it 17 times for 116 yards.Jules Sullen, first-year Scotlandville coach, knew it wasn’t a great night for his offense.“They did a great job at disguising some things,” Sullen said. “We just couldn’t get in a rhythm. This was just one of those years where we’re running a new scheme and a new system, and it’s going to take some time. But our guys competed and fought hard. I’m extremely proud of them.”No. 6 Brother Martin takes a three-game winning streak into the quarterfinals to face No. 3 Rummel, who is coming off a bye.The Raiders won their regular-season matchup against the Crusaders 17-0 on Oct. 20 at Tad Gormley.“We’re excited to be playing some better football right now, but we have a really tough test next week versus Rummel.”Brother Martin 30, Scotlandville 0TeamBMScotlandvilleFirst Downs166Yards Rushing198132Yards Passing6266Passes5-8-06-11-0Fumbles lost0-00-0Penalties-yards5-4213-89  Scoring SummaryBM977730Scotlandville00000 BM: LJ Gilyot 22-yard catch by Garrett Mmahat.
