A pair of defending state champions look to add to their impressive resumes while two other area teams have a shot at history as well Saturday at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.In Division I, No. 1 seed Mount Carmel Academy goes after its fifth consecutive state championship when the Cubs face district rival and second seed Archbishop Chapelle Saturday night at 7 p.m.Moutn Carmel advanced with a convincing 25-19, 25-12, 25-10 win over fourth-seeded St. Joseph’s Academy Friday.Ellie Holzman led the way with 19 kills while Madelyn Keene had 12 blocks for Mount Carmel (35-2).The Chipmunks lost the first set before rallying to down No. 3 Dutchtown 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-9.Hailey Melerine produced 16 kills and two asses while Hannah Volpi dished up 33 assists to pace Chapelle. It is the first trip to the state title match in 23 years for the Chipmunks (34-10). Mount Carmel won all three meetings with Chapelle in the regular season, not losing a set.In Division II, five-time defending state champion and No. 1 Teurlings Catholic rolled over No. 5 Ben Franklin 25-16, 25-12, 25-23 and the Rebels will take on No. 2 Cabrini for the state championship Saturday at 2 p.m.The Crescents downed No. 3 St. Thomas More 25-21, 25-18, 25-21.Kai Williams led the way for Cabrini (31-9) with 15 kills and 18 digs while Jenn Brue had 32 assists. It will be a rematch of last year’s state title match when Teurlings Catholic beat the Crescents in straight sets.In Division III, defending state champion and No. 1 Vandebilt Catholic fought off No. 4 De La Salle 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 15-7 in a hotly contested match. The Terriers advance to face rival and third-seeded E.D. White Catholic in the final Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cardinals outlasted No. 2 St. Michael in five grueling sets.There will be a new state champion in Division IV.No. 1 Archbishop Hannan saw to that, ending the reign of No. 4 Pope John Paul II with a 25-12, 25-8, 25-12 win over the Jaguars. Allee Morris had 21 kills and two blocks while Grace Lagalante had 40 assists and seven digs for Hannan (39-6). It was the second win for the Hawks over the Jaguars this season. The Hawks will face No. 3 University High in the final Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Cubs knocked out No. 2 Notre Dame in three sets.In Division V, No. 1 Country Day is in search of a third straight state title after the Cajuns held off a furious rally by No. 4 Lafayette Christian in five sets, winning 26-24, 25-20, 223-25, 17-25, 15-4.Alex Smith had 19 kills for Country Day (40-5) while Mary Tebbe had 58 assists and 14 digs.
