Linebacker Demario Davis was, perhaps, the highest profile free agent acquisition the Saints made in 2018, and he’s paying off big.Aside from, perhaps, cornerback Patrick Robinson, now on injured reserve, former Jets linebacker Demario Davis was the biggest free agent acquisition the Saints made during the 2018 offseason. Last year, in New York, he was Pro Football Focus‘ eighth overall ranked linebacker at the close of the 2017 Season. Why the Jets decided to let him go is anybody’s guess but he was an unrestricted free agent, the Saints offered the money and New Orleans was a place in which he saw himself playing. For the Saints and their fans, it doesn’t really matter how he got here. All that matters is that he’s here.A lot of credit for how the Saints are playing against the run this season can attributed to the defensive line. Not taking anything away from them. But, currently, Demario Davis is Pro Football Focus’ number one ranked linebacker versus the run.He didn’t get much of a chance to show that in Week 10 against the Bengals. In that 51-14 win by the Saints, they never punted and the defense was only on the field for 29 snaps. That must have felt like a day off when the defense is usually on the field for twice that number of plays. But Davis is a big reason why the Saints were able to shut down players like Saquon Barkley and Todd Gurley. Two of the best running backs currently playing the game. His 4.6 speed, ability to diagnose plays and close quickly have made him the nightmare of offensive coordinators game-planning their rushing attack each week.In Week 11, the Philadelphia Eagles come to the Superdome with the 22nd ranked rushing attack in the league. The Saints run defense is first in the NFL. Needless to say, the Eagles will be relying heavily on the arm of Carson Wentz to keep them in this game.Unfortunately for them, Davis has shown he’s pretty good at rushing the passer, with two sacks on the season, and you can bet Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is going to be unleashing him a little bit more in that area this Sunday. Next: Adding Brandon Marshall strong move for Saints Davis is signed with the Saints through the 2020 Season. And he’ll be the face of the franchise along with Cameron Jordan, Sheldon Rankins and Marshon Lattimore until 2021. If he keeps doing what he’s been doing this year for the Saints defense, they need to make sure he stays in the fold as long as they can keep him.
