This will be the Saints’ fourth primetime appearance of the year, and they’ve won each time. The national broadcast will be aired on FOX with the network’s A-team on the call: Joe Buck and Troy Aikman from the booth, with Erin Andrews and Kristina Pink reporting in from the field.
New Orleans is bringing the game’s top offense (37.2 points per game) against a Cowboys defense that hasn’t allowed 30 points in a game all year – the only unit to hold that distinction. Something is going to give. That’s also true when Dallas has the ball: they want nothing more than to run the ball down the heart of the Saints defense, but that matchup pits an elite Cowboys running game (4.9 yards gained per carry) versus an underrated New Orleans run defense (3.6 yards alllowed per attempt).
A big problem looms for Dallas, with All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith needing to show improvement from neck and elbow injuries in pregame warmups before he’ll be cleared to play. NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that “it’s not looking good,” and Smith could be replaced again by Cameron Fleming after missing last week’s game. That opens up a vulnerability for a surging Saints defensive line to exploit. It’s the kind of get-right game rookie star Marcus Davenport needs to return to form after being sidelined with a toe injury.
Dallas is led by quarterback Dak Prescott, who looks like a totally different player since the team acquired former Oakland Raiders first round pick Amari Cooper. New Orleans is built around Drew Brees, the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for November, but he’ll see some new things from Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, who was recognized as November’s Defensive Rookie of the Month.
