“Did [a flag] come out? It is what is. It doesn’t matter what I was expecting…Yeah, I’m cool. I came back out, didn’t I?”
Referee Walt Anderson was promoted to working as a full-time NFL official in 2017, bringing more than a decade’s experience from officiating Big 12 games in addition to 15 years with the NFL (he’s since retired from working with the Big 12). Anderson’s crew is one of the NFL’s most-experienced and top-rated, but missed a serious player safety violation by not penalizing Smith. Anderson’s crew was also publicly criticized for overlooking player safety violations in a 2016 game between the Seattle Seahawks and Buffalo Bills.
As for the Saints, they never released a statement on whether Kamara was being evaluated for a concussion or other head injury. He did leave the field for the medical tent and then the locker room, escorted by team trainers, and eventually returned to finish the game. But don’t be surprised if the NFL investigates to make sure the team followed proper injury procedure, though it appears they did nothing wrong.
