The New Orleans Saints selected five players in the NFL 2019 Draft this past weekend. Two of the players, Eric McCoy – Center, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson – Safety, were classified with #2 rankings per NFL Draft Specialist, Mike Detillier.
Most National Analyst grade the Saints selections as a B, but I have it as a B+. The Saints stayed true to form and resisted the urge to “buy the shiny new toys” and selected positions of need over talent. McCoy definitely will have an opportunity to compete for the starting Center spot on the team. Alize’ Mack may have a good chance to battle Dan Arnold for the final Tight End spot with Jared Cook and Josh Hill already signed to solid contracts.
Both safeties, Garner-Johnson and Hampton, will battle in training camp and can make the final roster because of the lack of depth behind Marcus Williams, Chris Banjo and Vonn Bell. If you watched SEC games over the past years, you noticed Gardner-Johnson making plays in the Florida secondary time and time again. He has the look of a future Pro Bowler. Hampton is a “hard hitter” with length and good football instincts.
I really like the hustle and “football smarts” of Idaho’s Outside Linebacker Kaden Elliss. He is a football player!
